I am new to the boards and just now starting to get into the debate about to vaccinate or not...

but I wanted to share that my youngest daughter contracted pertussis when she was only 3 months old and was hospitalized for 7 days.  My 10 year daughter (who had all her vaccinations to date) was the first to get it, gave it to me and my husband (who was also hospitalized because of breathing difficulties) and therefore since I was nursing gave it to my newborn.

So-since we thought we were protected against it we still contracted it.  That same year is when they decided it was necessary to get the Dtap booster.

Still trying to sort out all this information about vaccinations.

anecdotal but every single person I know that has contracted wc was fully vaccinated.  ever wonder why there are so many boosters for that vaccine? it is because it is not effective and their answer is to give another shot.

Here is a link to a thread on the vaccination debate that may be of some interest to you:

there is no evidence that whooping cough is transfered through breastmilk.  So nursing had nothing to do with it unless you mean because you are nursing you were in contact with your newborn which would have been the case with formula feeding as well, unless you passed the responsibility of caring for the child entirely off on a non infected person for the duration of the illness (which you could have done as a breastfeeding mother as well if you pumped).  I'm not trying to debate the merits of breastfeeding, just noting that breastfeeding does nothing but offer protection via maternal antibody transfer.

Just wanted to throw in that one of the listed possible side effects of the vaccine (from the vaccine insert from the CDC) is SIDS!

I'd pick my child getting whooping cough over SIDS!
