Hi all. I'm mainly a lurker on this board, but could really use some insight. I'm back and forth trying to figure out what's best for my 9 month old DD. To get this new vaccine that worries me, or to take a risk that she get H1N1 which also scares me. At DD's last visit to the pediatrician he was not suggesting the new vaccine, but we have a well visit Thursday so I'm going to see what his view is currently.

I was wondering if any of your infants have had this new flu strand and how they did with it? So far NJ has the least number of cases, and DDs daycare has had no signs of any type of flu. But it's bound to rise a bit once the cold weather emerges. It's just hard to make a decision when all you hear is about the deaths that came from H1N1, not all the people that go through it just fine.

Does your daughter have underlying conditions (like specifically a respiratory problem, immune dysfunction or a serious organ defect of some sort )?  Do you do the seasonal flu vaccine?  Has she ever had a serious complication to an illness in the past?

Here is the thing.  There have been about 100 deaths in kids from complications from swine flu.  The majority of these cases involved children with some type of underlying condition already.  If you consider the number of children in this country these statistics are minute.  Of course the same can be said about serious adverse reactions to the vaccine too.  A tragedy is a tragedy.  You have to weigh the risk versus the benefits for your specific situation.  Your child is in daycare and not breastfed.  That does increase her risk of contracting it, but that certainly does not mean that she will or if she does that a case automatically equals death or even a complication.  I do not know the answers to my other questions yet but they are things you need to weigh.  Personally if my child were in a real risk category, as in seriously unhealthy, I would give serious consideration to it, but if overall she is generally healthy, no history of complications from illness, no underlying conditions, I would just boost her immune system as much as possible.  She is only eligible for the shot (too young for the mist) so if you do choose to go that route (which to be clear I am not suggesting that based on your answers thus far) make sure you request the single dose syringe so that you limit her exposure to thimerisol.  I know that some people have asserted that thimerisol is not harmful but that is just plain silly.  It is harmful, it may not be the cause of autism (it may,  I am not asserting a position either way) but it is certainly not a benign substance and it would be prudent to avoid exposure as much as possible.  I think the thing here is the unknown with regard to the vaccine.  This thing was rushed, we know it, they know it.  We are expected to just trust the manufacturers.  I don't know about you but I just do not have that kind of faith in pharmaceutical companies.  I think I have read that you do vaccinate, you just do it on a different schedule.  That means to me that you and I are on a different level when it comes to vaccines, so you also need to weigh my stance when you consider my recommendation.  I do not vaccinate at all.  I am open to vaccination if I feel that the benefit outweighs the risk but I have not come across a vaccine that does that for me and my family.  You see things differently, obviously, so clearly our risk/ benefit analysis came up with different results with regard to other vaccines.  I do not feel that this flu is any worse than the regular flu and I do not vaccinate for that. Actually I think this strain is less severe than the typical flu year but for some reason the media has latched onto it like a rabid dog and it is inciting irrational fears.  People do not normally get all this worked up over the darn flu.  It is the flu. Yes it can be dangerous but most people weather it just fine, there is no need for the craziness surrounding this one.  Australia has already gone through it's flu season and they are none worse the wear and they did not even have a vaccine to get.  They reported FEWER deaths than normal.
