Transitioning to one nap?

My 12 month old has been taking 2 naps for about 5 months.  One at 10 and one at 2.  Recently he refuses to go down at 2, so I assumed he was ready for just one nap.  He did this 4 days straight.  I struggled to keep him up until 11:45/12 and then he went down.  However he only sleeps an hour and twenty minutes max.  By 4 he is a wreck....fussy, cranky and very tired.  We moved his bed time back to 7:15 and he sleeps until 7:15.  My question is, I dont know if he is quite ready for one nap, but if he refuses the morning a few mornings, do I keep persistent and make it to 11:45/12 and deal with fussy afternoons, or on some days when he is exhausted, do I let him go down for 2 naps?  It has been almost a week since this began.  Any advice would appreciated as I am concerned about him getting enough rest.

First off lucky you!! My OYO now is refusing to nap at all - i dont even remember the last time she had two naps in one day!!!!

Honestly i wouldnt worry too much a 12mth old should be getting around 14hours of sleep within a 24 hour period so your OYO isnt too far off - if i were me i would just play it by ear with naps - just put him down when he seems tired even if it is only once a day :) HTH :)

I know with my OYO at about 13 months she stopped with 2 naps. She gave up her morning one on her own, I notcied she would just play in her crib instead of sleep. Normally they give up their morning naps first. She still takes a nap at 3 and sleeps til about 5. I think you just have to figure out what time works best for your little one. Good luck!

I always preface any sleep advice I give with this:  Ignore it because I have a horrible sleeper, or take it seriously because I have such a terrible sleeper that I have read every sleep book on the planet.  : )

That said, some of the many books I have read have discussed that some kids, rather than give up the morning nap, will take the morning and then try to skip the afternoon.  The problem you're running into is in all the books -- two naps are too much, one nap isn't enough.  I think you're definitely OK to do a "catch up" day here or there, which is sort of a compromise.  Give him two or three days with one nap, then a day with two naps, and keep an early bedtime.  On days with one nap you can do an even earlier bedtime.  We've done as early as 6 (from a normal of 7), and she will sleep to her normal time or even later in the morning.

The whole nap transition can take three weeks to two months, so you're still pretty early in the game.

Thank you so much for your advice.  I totally agree with the books.  He definitely is not ready for one, but done with 2.  Today for example, he went down and only slept 50 minutes.  By 4 his little eyes were red and he was exhausted.  He didnt want to eat much for dinner because he was so tired.  This is when I feel like a horrible mommy.  I tried to put him down at 10 and he was tired, but wouldnt go down.  Yes, we do push back bedtime earlier when he only has one nap.  The thing is, he seems to wake up about 45 mins earlier when we do that.  But again, it is early in the game, so we will see.
