Hello there...

I'm 24 and about 13 weeks pregnant with my first. Because I am overweight they did the glucose test at my very first appointment. Sure enough, that one came out high. So Went and did the 3 hr test and... yup... that one's high too. A lot of high. That's all I know. I'm supposed to be taking nutrition classes, but I don't know when...I'm supposed to be checking my sugar, but I won't get a meter till I start the classes. My aunt is a nurse and keeps implying that I need to be super careful or I'll lose the baby because of my sugar. At this point, as badly as I wanted this baby, I don't know if I could deal with that. But I honestly don't know what I'm doing. Please Help... anyone know what I need to be doing till I get into these classes? Just a tip so that I can feel like I'm doing something to keep my baby safe and healthy.

Tasha,

Hopefully someone here will have some advice for you. But in the meantime, I would call your doctor and see if he can give you some guidance.

Hey---you will be fine...  Just take a deep breath---you don't need high blood pressure on top of everything...  I am a type1 diabetic, have had it since I was 9.  I am now 31 weeks pregnant.  The main thing is to just eat healthy as you possibly can..  Don't beat yourself up though--it's not easy to completely change your eating habits overnight..  I was told that we receive a surge of hormones in the early morning hours, like 3-6am.  These hormones make your body's insulin not work as well.  So to avoid high morning blood sugars, go easy on the carbs before noon..  Try to eat maybe omlettes and a peice of whole grain toast..  I was told to stay away from high glycemic foods in the am, if you know what that is....  Good tip, anything white (sugar, milk, bananas, white flour).  Eat alot of protein, a little (good) fat, and lower carbs, but evenly spaced through the day. Try like 30grams of carbs for breakfast-15g for a snack, and then like 45-50g for lunch and dinner, and then another 15-20g for bedtime snack.  I hope this helps you a little, without confusing you too much..  Let me know if I can answer anything else, or clarify anything...  Gina

I agree with Gina. Ive been a type one diabetic since 14 yrs old. Dont freak out or stress out, that's number one danger to yourself and the baby. Im 27 weeks with this child and Im not a good eater but Im doing really good with my blood sugar. Like Gina said, eat 15-30 grams of carbs at breakfast, then 20 to 40 grams at lunch, so on. You'll do fine as long as you follow your doctor's orders and stick to the plan the best way you can. Don't listen to anyone esle but the doctor and your heart. :)
