Hi- I just posted to you on the PAL board...

I know you are concerned about risks to your baby but try not to let the information scare you.  If you get the GD under control, the risks go way down.  Most of the problems you hear about are the result of uncontrolled GD.

FWIW- my full-term baby was only 5 pounds 10 ounces and my preemies were only 3 pounds.  None of them had any problems with their sugar levels or anything else associated with diabetes.  You will get through this and we are here to help!

Please don't freak out about this. Certainly, there is a RISK, but that is different than a certainty and most of those risks are associated with diabetes that is excessively out of control.

I have had GD with all three of my pregnancies. With my first, I was diagnosed at the usual time (~30 weeks). I controlled it through diet alone, had excellent control, and was even allowed to go one week over my due date (rare b/c most doctors are worried about the baby being too big). My son was 8lbs 13oz, but he was almost a week late. Also, I think I am just meant to have big babies b/c with my second pregnancy, my doctor had me do the GD diet from 7 weeks on and my daughter was still 8 lbs 8oz (I think it had more to do with all that great nutrition).

Neither of my kids have had any issues with their blood sugars at birth and no issues. They are usually very healthy kids much of the time.

I am sorry you failed your three hour test. I think I posted to you before that it really isn't that bad. You get used to the diet and that makes all the difference in the health of your LO. My DS was 9 lb 1oz. but my DH is 6'2" and my DS was the smallest on his side of the family. DH's mom had been diagnosed GD with her youngest but probably was GD with all her kids given the smallest was 10+ lbs.

My DS has no ill effects and my GD went away very quickly after he was born. For that matter, my DH and his siblings have no ill-effects, even when his mom wasn't diagnosed. It will take some time to get used to it but if you have a good dietician and program management they will make you feel better and keep you more relaxed with the outcomes for all. Good luck!
