Hi all,

Just found out I have GD and received my glucometer in the mail along with the script for more strips and lancets. Does anyone know approximately how much they cost? Is it cheaper to get them somewhere like Costco or at a CVS/Riteaid? I'm hoping this isn't going to be insanely expensive.

Also, is it pretty standard to have to take your sugar levels four times a day or is it possible, if your numbers are low enough, to just eat a healthy diet once diagnosed and not have to deal with taking the sugar readings?

Thanks,
Chandra

Testing 4x a day is the norm, I believe and no, you can't test less as you go along.  I was diagnosed at 8 weeks and starting testing 2x every other day but once I got a few bad readings he started me testing 4x day (at approx. 15 weeks).  It gets a little easier.

I get my strips and lancets by RX and they cost about $20 and $11 for each.  I saw them on the shelf at Target but it was cheaper to get RX.

Good luck.

Chandra-

Have you called your insurance company?  After jumping through MANY hoops and talking to different people, I found out that my strips and lancets were covered by my insurance.  It was confusing because it wasn't through the regular prescription plan- there was a separate number for diabetic supplies.  At first I got the run-a-round because the person didn't understand what Gestational Diabetes was and wanted me to wait 3-4 weeks for supplies.  But I finally got someone on the phone to help me.  I had to have my doctor fax in the scripts and then they mailed me enough strips/lancets for the remainder of the pregnancy at no cost.  I'm not sure how common that is, but you might want to make some calls to find out.

Thanks, Reena! I think I'll give that a try! =)
