Any success in only gaining a little?

Hi everyone, I just had my first prenatal visit. I am a bit overweight - like 25 lbs. I've actually lost about 15 lbs since last spring but I still had 25 to go - and now I'm pregnant. I'm 37 and am anticipating a more difficult time losing the weight after the baby comes. My doctor suggested that I try to gain only 10-15 lbs. From last week to this week I had gained about 1 lb on my scale at home, but that could have been water weight, etc, from eating some salty, high fat foods. I've had some morning sickness and have craved carbs! I've definitely been off of my normal eating plan.

Anyway, my question is this. Is it really feasible to gain only 10-15 lbs if I really watch what I eat? I'm game to try - but I don't want to end up completely disappointed in the end.

First of all Congratulations! It is possible to gain between 10-15 pounds. With my daughter I only gained 10 pounds. With my son I was 40 pounds lighter when I got pg and I gained 40 pounds. I ended both of my pregnancies at the same weight. I think your body will gain what it needs for you to gain. I ate healthy with both of my pregnancies. The only difference in my pregnancies was that I was pg with my daughter from Aug to April and my son was October to July. So it was hotter with my son and I retained a lot of water. Try not to focus on the number on the scale and focus more on what you are eating and how much activity you are getting. A great web site for tracking your nutrition and exercise while pregnant and later while breastfeeding (if you choose to do so) is babyfit dot com. I am still using baby fit because I am breastfeeding. Having to put in what you eat really makes you accountable for what goes in your mouth and it helps you see where you can or need to eat better. I hope you'll stick around. :)

THANK YOU for the words of encouragement. With the morning sickness (which I actually have in the afternoons and evenings), I've really been wanting to eat lots of carbs that I don't normally eat. Potatoes, crackers, pasta. I'm going to try snacking on more fruits/veggies and see if they will satisfy/settle my stomach even if they aren't what I "think" I want. I am definitely planning to keep up my exercise regimen - my doctor encouraged it, as well. That should help me snap back into shape next summer after our little june bug arrives!

It is possible. I am craving carbs with this pregnancy too for some reason. So far I've gained between 10-15lbs already.

I gained 17 lbs with my pregnancy, but I think it would have been less if I hadn't developed pre-e in the last couple weeks. By the 39th week I had only gained 13.
