We are leaving for vacation on Sunday. DH and I will be flying to and from our destination. I am concerned about how to keep myself from contracting H1N1 while still enjoying our vacation. I have managed to dodge the outbreak at my son's middle school. But being around hundreds of people in the airport, on the plane and while out and about during our vacation is going to make it more difficult. Being that I work in the health care field I am always well equipped with my hand sanitizer and know how to properly wash my hands. But I don't believe we are allowed to have gels and lotions on the plane. So I will be unable to carry hand sanitizer or hand sanitizing lotions. Does anyone have any other ideas, besides the obvious WASH YOUR HANDS LIKE A MAD WOMAN, on how to keep myself healthy and virus free? Like I said I have been hand washing, taking my vitamins, and sanitizing the heck out of my house to keep any flu or cold viruses out of my home despite it being all around me. I just feel so out of control being in that public of a place. And there is no way I am canceling my vacation. HA HA HA It is a much needed and well deserved break right now. So any ideas?

You can take hand sanitizer on a plane-- I always do!  You just have to make sure you follow the rule for liquids.  I believe the container has to be under 3oz and you have to put the containers with liquids in a ziploc bag to pull out when you go through security.

Here's more information:

http://www.tsa.gov/press/happenings/9-25_updated_passenger_guidance.shtm

Just get a couple of bottles of sanitizer in the sample size and those should be fine.  I don't know about how effective masks are, but that might be another defense.

Have a great vacation!
