Raw files = more noise?

I've been noticing that after I edit my RAW files in ACR, play with them in CS4 and then save them as jpegs, the noise is out of control! It's SO much more than when I used to just shoot in jpeg. I am also using CS4 now instead of CS3 so I suppose maybe that could have something to do with it as well (maybe a setting?). I took a bunch of photos with iso 800 and the noise looks like it was at least 1600, if not 32000.

What do you think is going on?

Shooting in RAW will not give you more noise than shooting in jpeg.  Noise is determined obviously by ISO and your exposure.  If you underexpose a bit, you'll have more noise, even at a lower ISO.  And as you edit and lighten in PS, the noise will start to show more.  My guess is that when you are shooting in jpeg, as the camera comresses the image into the jpeg format it is doing a slight noise reduction in the process.  Shooting in jpeg is telling the camera to do some PP'ing of it's own (which is the biggest reason I do not shoot jpeg).  As far as I know, you can change certain settings in your camera's menu when shooting in jpeg.  I have a noise reduction setting on my XSi for jpeg.  It has different levels or to turn it off I think.  I've shot RAW so long now I don't remember exactly.  And going from CS3 to CS4 will not create more noise.  There is no noise setting in any of the editing programs unless you go to the Filter>Noise options to add or remove etc.  ISO 800 on my camera is really messy and if I underexpose it's really bad!  So it's common to have a fair amount of noise at ISO 800.  I'm sure your camera handles noise better than my entry level, but it's not the program...it's all in camera.  PS's noise reduction is pretty lame if you ask me.  I have NoiseWare from Imagnomic and it's AMAZING and worth the less than $100 that it costs.  I HIGHLY recommend it!  I hope that helps a bit!  :O)

What camera do you have? I know that with Nikon, certain noise settings are incorporated in the jpg files on the camera, but for the RAW files only if you use the Nikon software that comes with the camera.

Thanks Crystal. I knew about the auto pping that jpeg does, but I didn't know that there was a noise factor in there as well. The noiseware is on my Christmas list, but now I'm not so sure I can wait!

I have a canon t1i (500D). Do you think I may benefit from checking out the software that came with my camera? Is there a noise-reduction feature for RAW?
