I think it really depends on what you're looking for in a camera, and what your budget is.  Congrats & enjoy when you do finally get it!

I'd like a camera that I can use and add lens to as I need or want to.  I'd love to get into photography eventually when the time allows.  As for the price, I don't really have a budget, just want to get a higher MP camera with a fast shutter speed.  Something that will work for me now and in the future if I do go on to do photography as an additional career:)

If price isn't a huge issue, then DEFINITELY get the 50D. Especially if you are thinking you might really want to get "in" to photography. It has lower noise at higher ISO's, for starters. That is a big reason. I wish I had started with the 40D (the predecessor to the 50D) instead of a rebel. I wouldn't be so stuck right now if I had done that. I can not wait to upgrade. If I had the 40D, I'd be less restricted by my camera.

I voted the 50D but I would also highly suggest the 40D.  There wasn't a big upgrade between the 40D & 50D to warrent the price difference.  Shutter speed depends on various conditions (lighting being the most important), so looking for a camera soley on shutter speed isn't really relavent.  But, the higher ISO capabilites of a camera will give you a faster SS.  There are drawbacks, but a camera that allows you to use a higher ISO will allow you a faster shutter speed.  I have the XSi (highest ISO is 1600).  The T1i is the newer model of my camera.  Had I known then what I know now I would've gotten the 40D which was newly released when I bought my XSi.  Good glass (good quality lenses) is very important but when first starting a decent starter camera and kit lens is all you need.  The XSi, T1i or the 40d/50D is a great place to start.  The XSi and T1i are entry level DSLR's and the 40D/50D are the next step up.  So I personally would suggest to start with an entry level of even better the 40D/50D and then once you learn about yourself as a photographer, then invest in good glass.  Once you have your camera and good glass, then upgrade your camera body!  I HTH and ask if you have any specific questions.  Let us know what you decide and welcome the board!  :O)
