Hi ladies!

It's been a while since I posted.  I am concerned about my periods.  The last 5 mos or so they've been really heavy for about 3 days, then abruptly stop, then as soon as I think it's done, it starts up again.  Then once it finally starts to taper I get brownish discharge for a while.  I wear a tampon 24 hrs a day for the first few days and it seems like it stops the flow to the point where i think it's over, but then a day or two later BAM it's back bright red blood and I need a tampon again.  Thsi is odd to me because before my daughter I had very regular light periods lasting 3 to 4 days max.  I am still fairly regular (period every 28-30 days) but the whole thing lasts for almost two weeks.  Is this normal?  Has anyone experienced this?

Hi Melissa,

I had heavy periods for a few months in Spring 2008.  I ended up seeing my OB/GYN because it was really a problem, lots of clotting etc.  I was used to short cycles of everye 25-26 days getting a period for 2 slightly heavy days then 2 shorter days and then it was gone.

They did a uterine biopsy to see if I was having any issues there, and they found nothing.  They also did bloodwork.  Eventually things went back to normal on their own. In March I had a m/c and things have been heavier again and I am not sure if it's part of aging or what but I'm not a fan of it.  It could be worse but I preferred the 4 days and gone variety.

I'd ask your doctor about it, it could be just a hormonal issue that is easily remedied....but it might pay off to be checked to be sure it's not anything like a fibroid etc that needs to be removed.  They might be able to help you resolve the issue so you can live normally again, because it is a big inconvenience IMHO.

Thanks Ladies!  It ended up being a complex ovarian cyst.  Luckily, it went away on its own. Hopefully next month my cycle is more normal.  The doc said I probably had an anovulatory cycle which caused the cyst and then more issues.

PS I tried the gyn board but no one responds to questions there!
