Even though it is very late in the summer to be hiring, I was offered a job yesterday.

The good news is that it pays well, and they are willing to be flexible.

Lots of bad news, but I'm trying to suck it up for now.  First, it's 90 minutes away.  Blah.  Second, I will be teaching all day on every other Saturday.  Double blah.  Third, the job sounds hard because they have no sense of order.  Fourth, I will be a 12-mo employee because I will have to teach half the summer.  But that means I'm expected to be there even during the half the summer when I'm not teaching.  Dumb.

But I only have to go once or twice a week besides those Saturdays, so that's good.  I'm hoping I don't have to do it for long before something closer opens up.

Congratulations! I'm so happy for you! I know how worried you were.

First of all things can change in a minute - something else might open up while you are there. It happened to my dh who took a job with really bad schedule and then something else opened up and he jumped at it. You'll see...In a meantime a bird in hand...

Secondly, 90 minute commute can be time well spent if you for example like listening to books on tape (well, ipod). How often do you have books read to you :).

Third, you won't be working daily, so two or three day weeks won't be as bad as 5 day weeks would have been.

Fourth, IT PAYS WELL.

I think it will all work out, you'll see. And nobody is stopping you from applying elsewhere in a mean time.

Congratulations again!

I agree, find some way to occupy yourself during those commutes and I don't think it'll be all that bad! I hope the teaching situation itself is fun and easy on you. Good luck!

Excellent points Irena :)  It will be for at least a year, because schools don't hire faculty mid-year.  They might advertise a position, but they always start in the fall of each year; I've never seen one that didn't.  But hopefully I can suck it up in the meantime.

I don't do well with books on tape because my mind wanders too much.  But I've done 90-min commutes before, so I'll manage to occupy myself somehow.

I'm quite relieved that it's only a few times a week.  I wouldn't have taken it if I had to be there every day AND every other Saturday.
