Does your child's school practice any positive parenting techniques that you might use at home? I know growing up that they were quick to punish kids at my school. Has that changed much?

Great question Wendy! Traditional schooling doesn't normally coincide with PP but some school corps are better than others; especially those who have magnet schools which include Montessori schools. Ours happens to have a couple.

I still see very punitive behavior from school personel, particularly in the southern states! It varies too from state to state. Many of the teachers and resource people think that "detentions" and writing assignments are a positive way of dealing with behavior, simply because they are not CP. Last week, a teacher in my city was arrested for grabbing an older student by the throat!

Thank God our public school system has opted to drop CP as far as an option. But, my state is still one that allows paddling; it is up to each school corporation (board). But I don't see much PP being implemented as an alternative. I also don't see the elected school board even trying to discuss these matters with parents and that bothers me a lot. In some cases, they even try to keep discussions hush-hush because they want the control.

Last year, when my youngest was still in Middle School, I saw change! The longtime Principal, Mr. M, was always a good guy but a little punitive in the earlier years when it was more common. However, slowly, he started to come around (I am assuming he educated himself) and use a lot more positive avenues. By the time Ty left there Mr. M was writing uplifting newsletters every month directed toward the parents and suggesting that being positive was better for the kids. He even started to empathize more with the kids rather than always with his teachers (everybody likes him). When Ty was going through the stuff with me and his dad Mr. M was extremely understanding and helpful! So, being that my Bible Study last night was entitled "hope," there is HOPE, people!!!
