Hi Ladies!
I usually hang out at the Exclusively Pumping Board and I just wanted to introduce myself here.
My LO was prem and couldn't BF after his long NICU stay (long story). He is now 7 mos old and happy and healthy. I've been exclusively pumping since birth. I've surpassed all of the goals I've set and surprised myself with how long I've been doing this. I realize there are people who EP for a whole year or more...but I just don't think that's the right choice for me. I am really looking forward to being done with pumping, so I can spend more time with my LM!
I am down to 2 pumps/day...1st thing in the AM and last thing in the PM. Not sure how to proceed from here.
Any advice would help!
TIA!
Chandra

Hi Chandra! Welcome!

You have done an awesome job, congratulations on surpassing your goals!!!!

Often I see that decreasing from 2 sessions is the hardest step.  How many ounces are you getting from each pump session?  You have a few choices:

Decrease them at the same time (e.g. you get 8 oz at each session, decrease them to 6-7 oz for 3 to 7 days; when you are comfortable, decrease them further)

Pick the session you prefer to get rid of first and start decreasing the output of that session gradually.

I was going to suggest weaning the evening session first since I assume you get more output in the mornings and that might be the hardest to get rid of.  However, I remember when I was nursing, the night session was the last one I weaned and it worked out fine for me.

Even though I personally prefer to wean out one session at a time, I've noticed that occasionally EPers who pump a fairly large volume at a time have trouble with this method when they get down to the end (1 or two sessions left).  So, if you are having trouble with these last two, my gut feeling is that you should decrease them both at the same time, but go really slowly, more slowly than if you did one at a time.  (My usual aversion to decreasing multiple sessions at once is there is a potential to get really uncomfortable and engorged if you go too fast.)

Sorry this got long!  HTHs!  Let us know how it's going!

HI, Chandra... I'm sure we answered each others questions on the EP board. I went to two daily pumps, to one (for a day), to none. In two days, one breast got engorged. I pumped again (if a day or two goes by and you need to pump for comfort rub Lanolin or lotion on your breast to avoid getting cracked nipples like me - ouch!). That was the last of it! Now the pump is in the closet waiting for baby number two. YAY!

Thanks guys.
Just an update...
I am down to 1 pump in the evening (just works better in my schedule). I was quite sore on day 1, but cabbage leaves helped. Boy, did I feel ridiculous with pieces of vegetables coming out of my bra...but oh well it worked. LOL!
I can't quite bring myself to cut out that last pump!! And, I never thought I'd say that!! One of these days I'll be ready to HUTH for good.

"And, I never thought I'd say that!! "

I'm not surprised!  Weaning is very bittersweet!!!

Hugs,
