I dug into this myself about four or five years ago, too, curious about it.  I had/have no intention of joining up, either, but am always curious about other religions.  I am by general definition Pagan, but I tend to plunder other religions for concepts I find appealing ;)

The concepts I found about how Scientologists believe energy works, I can get behind.  The mythology is not my style, especially if they take it literally.  And the interaction between its members, and between ranking members and new 'recruits,' I dislike.

The only people I know who were Scientologists (and I don't know any who still are) fled from it in rage at the cultlike atmosphere.

I concluded that the mythology was meant to be fiction which some had taken too literally (I conclude that about some other mythology as well!), that some of the people were too manipulative, but that it wasn't completely devoid of things I could agree with.

Looking forward to what others will contribute, too, I'm also curious :)  Good subject!

My limited experience with Scientologists has led me to conclude that use deceit and manipulation to gain followers, and separate them from their money. I had a scientologist knock on my door, offering to give me a free "pschycological" test, but I already knew from a friend of mine who got taken by this scam, that it was just a front to sell Scientology materials. I was also accosted by a Sceintologist in Georgetown who was trying to sell me Scientology lessons & when I told him I couldn't afford it, he pointed to the camera hanging around my neck and told me I could sell my camera to get the money to pay for the Scientology lessons. (Actually it was the chance to be "processed" by Scientologists.) I grabbed my camera and turned on my heel and walked away. I think this organization is about greed & power. That's just my opinion based on my limited contact with Scientologists.

The interesting thing about Scientology is that it was invented by a sci-fi writer in the 50s, and people are still willing to accept it as a religion.
