cult-like? Designed to break down a person's mental defenses, common sense, psychological/emotional equilibreium, in order to gain mental control over the person? Keep up the "pressure" as Snow brought up in the Scientology thread? There's an Hispanic church a few doors down. Large family congregation. But last night, and other night-time services, it was a loud person yelling and haranguing. The voice was male, screaming, ranting. For me, I don't get why people would want to be targeted like that. To be battered verbally? This is a Christianity-oriented church. I guess I have a strong enough sense of self, that I wouldn't like being treated in such a horrible fashion. That's not, to me, a psychologically healthy way to seek one's God/s. What do you think? Why do people submit to this kind of thing? This sounds cult-like, yet the family services aren't like this, with children present. Loud music, that we can hear, but no harangung on Sundays.

In a lot of Christian groups/denoms, believing in your own rubbishness is quite important. That is, you are only valuable as God gives you value. You are only worthy because Jesus's blood makes you so. Without God/Jesus, you would be a hopeless, wretched, miserable sinner, incapable of doing anything good or worthwhile.
This is nicely reinforced by sitting and being screamed at for a couple of hours ;o)
YIKES! :O (shaking my head) Sounds so abusive to me, and a way to break people down so they have no healthy sense of self or self-respect at all. Shaking my head. Maybe some people actually choose to be treated this way, for some reason, due to an inner psychological need of some kind (unhealthy, IMO, but that's me)? I guess I am fortunate I never experienced Christianity in this guise, when I was a practicing Christian in parts of my life. I feel very fortunate, as I could have become susceptible to this type of cult psychological manipulation, to my inner damage, had I run across or gotten sucked into such a denom/group. :O
