Whether formally or informally, how do people feel about converting?

If you now practice a religion that you weren't raised in how did it come about? What do your family and friends think if you did this in adulthood? And how do you handle your children on the matter? Do you encourage your children to practice this religion or let them follow their own path?

I unconverted, lol! I began as a fundamentalist Christian and am now an agnostic.

I hope my son will find his own faith or non-faith path, but I confess that it would be difficult for me if he took up with a fundamentalist religion of any flavour.

After falling in love with a wonderful Jewish man, I began studying the Jewish faith and fell in love that faith and people, as well. I converted formally a year ago. My family was very supportive - even my Southern Baptist cousins came to the conversion. We agreed before we married to raise the kids Jewish, so it wasn't a change in our childrearing for me to embrace the Jewish soul in my redneck body.

I like that Jewish soul a redneck body...

I didn't make much of a change - just a step to the left, perhaps. My family was not in the least concerned - more glad I'd found a church home. Nor were they in the least concerned when I also married a Jewish guy. But my Jewish guy is a pretty dedicated agnostic, so the religious child-rearing was left to me.

I grew up and was raised Baptist. My father was the preacher so I was practically raised in the church. If I'm honest, I always doubted it all and it never really made logical sense to me. I was never allowed to voice these concerns. Now I am agnostic. My family thinks I'm crazy-those who know. Some of the very strict Christians pray for me. :)

Knowing how stifled I was as a child in the religion I was raised in, I don't force my son to believe anything. I answer his questions to the best of my ability and I provide resources when he asks. Whatever he decides to believe will be his choice as I never want him to feel forced into something that is so personal. All I'm concerned about is what kind of a person he grows up to be. That is far more important to me that what religion he may follow.
