My sister has worked for a recruiting company for years & knows what a resume should look like. When the time comes, I will have her help w/ mine. That's my suggestion to you. Truth be told, most employers will see the history of not working & toss you out unless you have volunteer work & computer training in there to bridge the gap. When youre ready to go to work, try to set up a meeting w/ your local recruiting firm, i.e: Adecco, Frontline, Express Personnel, Manpower.
I worked through Express for 9 months before getting hired @ a very large corporation. That temp work led to 5 years w/ this company. I would definitely go through a temp agency again. However, even if youre against it, it won't hurt to meet w/ them to have them fix your resume the way you want.
