Hey Everyone –

I’m looking for some ideas on how to keep my 2 year old (just turned 2 in August) busy during our LONG 12 hour trip we are making to visit my family this Thanksgiving.  We just made a 17 hour ride this summer due to traffic and construction that would have normally only been about an 9 hour drive.  Well it was HORRIBLE!!

We have a DVD player in the van but that only got us so far, we tried snacks galore and we brought those magic marker things… you know the ones that only work in the special color books… my son is into cars and that is it!!

My husband is dreading the drive not to monition it’s his in-laws we are going to visit…lol I know that can’t help.  So I looking to you guys for some ideas on how to keep my toddler busy and to keep him from screaming the whole entire way!!

At this point I’m up for any suggestions because I’m half temped to just feed him candy and suckers the whole way since suckers are like magic…hahaha I’m not even sure what he would be like with all that sugar because he doesn’t get them often!

Looking forward to your suggestions & I know I can count on you guys to get some good ones.  I think I might post this on a few other boards I frequent just get as many suggestions as possible.

Thanks!!!!

-Heather

Hi Heather, We took my kids to NC (about 10 hrs) this summer, and I know part way there we ended up pulling over and I climbed in the back with the kids to play with them and that helped. We have a portable dvd, and I let him buy one special new movie or the trip. We did songs - my boys love to sing - i.e. turtle song, twinkle star, I love you, anything with hand motions or we would make up silly rhyme songs etc. The other thing we did (fortunately it was a saturday - so cell time was free) every time we saw 3 red cars in a row - the color and count he was good at during that time - he could make one phone call so that kept him busy looking for cars and then talking on the phone - I'll be in trouble when he's a teenager. We still stopped about every 3 hours. I saw an article recently where on every trip they took they would stop at each state sign and take pictures so they could make a scrap book of their family in all the states. Anyway, there is my $0.02, hope it helps. Good luck and have a great holiday with your family!

Is it 12 hours straight through?

Or is it 12 hours, including stopping every few for your toddler to run around, etc.??

Either way, if it were me, I wouldn't try to do it in one day. I'd get a hotel room and break up the driving... but I know that may not be possible for everyone.

We went to my uncle's cottage this past summer which is a 4 hr. drive non-stop. It took us about 6-7 hours because of lunch, stops to run or stretch our legs, etc.

I'd buy some new toys and dole them out one at a time as he gets bored. If he gets to the point of non-stop fussiness it's time to stop driving : )

It's a 12 hour drive strait through - it typically takes us about 14 hours with stops & Lunch or Dinner.  We normally take sandwich stuff with us to make lunch in the car because we leave so early so lunch tends to be around 10:30 for us.  We wont be doing that this time because I'm pregnant and can't eat the lunch meat so we will have to figure something else out for that.  We would definitely stay over night 1/2 way though if that was an option, however, we have 2 dogs (Lab& Husky) that have to travel with us so staying over night is not an option.  We could find a hotel that allows dogs but those are hard to come by with the route we take and we like to drive as far as we can get on the first day.  I guess is all else fales we will find someplace to stay.  I have looked online for ideas on keeping your toddler busy on a road trip and there have been some really great ideas!  So I'm hoping some of the tricks will work.  I'm wishing for the best and I think my husband is expecting the worst...lol

Here is the link I found with a ton of great ideas so hopfully they will work!

Just be VERY careful because you (and your son) can easily get DVT (deep vein thrombosis) from sitting like that for too many hours.

A friend of mine got it from a 10hr. flight recently. It's BAD!! And you're at a higher risk for it because you're pregnant.

Safe travels!
