Hi...hope for some help.  My 24 month old DD has been going through a couple episodes of constipation.  In November she had a couple days of screaming and grunting when she had to have a bowel movement.  I gave her a suppository which helped and in a couple days she was back to normal.

This past week she has had the same thing.  I have tried everything, apple juice, pears, prunes,  peaches, lots of liquids, exercise, warm baths and not giving her anything to which might contribute to constipation.  Nothing is working.  SHe will scream so loud, grunt and get very rigid and point to her bottom and still no bowel movement.  I feel so bad for her.

Has anyone else gone through this problem with their toddler?

Thanks for listening, Mary

Hi there. My kids tend to have problems with this. You've been trying great stuff, and I'm sorry it's not working for you. A few other suggestions are dried apricots and ground flax seeds. I just took my 6 year old to the doc on Monday and now she's on Miralax for two weeks. Maybe you'll need to see your DD's pedi? I usually get the answer that I'm now giving the kids enough fruits, fruit juices or dried fruits. I am, they just are easily constipated. So if you have tried all that, keep a diary of what you give when to prove to the pedi maybe, then take her in. I hope the dried fruits work! I know when my youngest has too many raisins, boy does diaper sure show it!

Hi there,
I know they say to avoid any potty training if there is constipation. Not sure if you guys were pursuing this.

MY DD also eats a ton of dates and figs, that seems to help her stay regular.
Also, I have heard that the pediatricians use a ton of miralax as it is quite gentle. i would definitely ask them about this.

Good luck,
V

Hey Mary. I'm glad you found us! Looks like the other ladies gave you some great advice. It sounds like you have been doing all the right stuff. I tend to agree with Mandy and that it might be time for a trip to the pedi. Miralax is a great thing! I'm lucky and a glass of apple juice will clear any of mine up in no time! I have used the glycerin suppositories and they seem to work well too, but don't use them too much as they can get dependent on any laxative.
Also, V gave some great advice on not potty training while this is happening. She could associate pooping in her diaper/panties with bad behavior and 'hold' it leading to constipation. I never know with two year olds if they are potty trained, or even trying.(my 2 year old doesn't have a clue the potty exists!(LOL).
I hope you hang around.
