Hi, my DD is very much addicted to her "shu shu" and often has melt downs is she doesn't get it. We are trying to wean her off of it now that she's getting older, she also is prone to ear infections and were told to get her off the soother.

I would really appreciate everyone experience on getting rid of the soother, I'm thinking cold turkey is the way to go but I'm worried about how hard it will be on her and on the rest of the family. So any and all stories and advice are welcomed!

Please and Thank-you

Hi Nicole,

I did Cold Turkey with both of my kids and I really think it worked well. Instead of the process being drug on for weeks (maybe even months) I took them away, we had 2 not so great days and then it was done.

With my oldest we gathered up her nasties (nasty's?) and set them out, the "Pacifier Fairy" came and got them and left a toy in their place. We told her Babies needed them and she gave them up. She asked for it once the next day and we reminded her that the babies had them now. She didn't ask again.

My youngest was more resistant to the idea. So I took a few days and threw out any pacifier that wasn't on her person at the time until I was down to that one. I waited til she was asleep took it away, tossed it and acted like it never existed (Poot? What Poot?). She had some trouble going to sleep the first couple nights but after a couple days she forgot about it.

I know other people have had success with the Pacifier Fairy too so it may be worth a shot. :-)

HTH!

Thanks Dedi, I have heard about the paci fairy before. I'm thinking Riley is going to be like your youngest though and I'm better off just throwing them away and acting like they never existed.  It nice to hear that it was only rough for a few days.

 Thanks again!

At what age did you get rid of the pacifiers?  My ds is 16 months.  We have tried keeping them away from him during the day and only giving it back to him at nap or bed time.  But that doesn't work well now that both me and my dh are unemployed.  We are all getting bored at home and my ds has been a lot more cranky.  It is not nice enough weather to get out of the house and go to the park.  My ds has developed a terrible attitude if he doesn't get his way.  We try very hard not to spoil him since we are home with him all the time.  He is still falling asleep in my arms and then I put him to bed.  So most of the time he is not sleeping through the night.  Last night he woke up 5 times and i had to go in his room, put his pacifier back in his mouth to calm him down to go to sleep.  Any suggestions would be helpful.

Hey Nicole! Welcome to the board.. I'm late in answering. The other Mom's had some great ideas, and ITA that cold turkey is the only way to do it. It was really great seeing you over here, and hope to see you more!
