I think it varies by kiddo. :-)

With my oldest she didn't have first steps, she just took off walking. (to the trashcan... ugh)

With my now 3 1/2yo she took her first steps(from the couch to her Nana), waited a couple days and tested it out a few more times and then started walking.

They both walked at 9 months (sigh).

With Patrick there was about a 2 week span from taking a couple steps to fully being able to walk around, It was a couple days after his beithday. With Riley the day she took a couple steps on her own was the day she walked everywhere! and it seemed like a week later she was running, at 9 1/2 months!
