When I had my HSG, I was taking Metformin and was concerned about the dye used. I asked the doctor and she said that the trouble is with some contrast dyes used in things like CAT scans but that the dye used for an HSG was fine with metformin.
Taking a Motrin is a good idea but it wasn't too bad. Putting the catheter into the uterus did not hurt at all. When they injected the dye I could feel it fill up my uterus and then felt some cramping like a bad menstrual cramp. It lasted for maybe 10 minutes and then I felt much better. Just lie there as long as you need to because they may try to get you up off the table quickly. I needed a few more minutes for the cramping to subside before I felt steady to get up.
Good luck!
