Hi all! I'd like to know if women in labor can eat? I've heard that hospitals won't let women in labor eat...

Most hospitals don't like allowing you to eat. The reason being is if something goes wrong and you have to be intubated for some reason you could potentially throw up and aspirate on the food you've ingested. However, labor requires a lot of energy and therefore calories. Think of it as running a marathon with only an IV drip. Most midwives recommend eating and drinking as long as you can/want to during labor to keep up stamina. Some hospitals may be more lenient but from what i found they really don't like letting women eat. You'd really have to talk to your DR about that particular hospitals policies.

I'll mention that I was a bit disturbed when the midwife answered my question with "You won't WANT to eat". As it turned out, she was right in my case, because my labor turned very intense, very fast, and I never actually missed a meal (though I was up all night). It might help you and your providers if you make it clear that "EAT" does not mean "Thanksgiving dinner" but more like "energy bar" or "consomme" or something light if you feel like your strength is flagging.

Most hospitals have a no food/drink policy (ice chips anyone?!).  I gave birth with midwives at a birthing centre - I actually ate light foods all the way through early labour which lasted about 15 hours (toast, some noodle soup, fruit, juice), and had some diluted juice and a cookie just before active labour really kicked in.  Active labour started right away and I actually felt like I might throw up the juice and cookie, but I didn't - and I definitely didn't want to eat another thing, at all.  I drank a little bit of water, I think, before giving birth 2 1/2 hours later.  Food definitely wasn't appealing until after giving birth, and then I ate quite a bit!

Thanks everyone! That is what I thought the reason was, given hospital policies...I'm leaning towards a homebirth right now, I never thought I would, but I think I will feel more powerful and less distracted by people around me!!

I like to have the choice to eat or not! I can't imagine being in labor all day without eating at least a light snack, unless I really don't feel like it of course!!
