I am trying to get up enough nerve and motivation to start a small garden.

Does anyone have a vegetable/ flower/ herb garden? do you have any hints for me getting started? Should I start from seeds or should I buy plants and transplant them? Should I start growing something inside since it's starting to get cold out?

Oh please help~! Where do I start?

Buy this book and start with a single 16-square-foot garden, or else one for you and one for the kids. Starting seeds is easy, but it requires a bit more planning and consistent tending in the early weeks. Nursery plants are easier for many things, especially for the first year.

Not sure where you live. We can't even begin to plan gardening until February. We can get frost into late May. Much will depend on your local climate.

Warning: gardening is seriously addictive.

You can start planting your bulbs for flowers that will pop up in the Spring and even some in the Fall. Yes Spring is usually the best time to start your garden if there is frost or cold weather where you are at. Speaking of- we just bought a bunch that I need to get into the ground before the cool weather hits. We are out here in California and the weather has been very mild. We are still very warm during the day and only cooler at nighttime. Trish :)

The bulb idea is a good idea, for something you can do RIGHT NOW. As far as veggies/spices go, you should wait until the spring probably. Then the easiest thing to grow is probably perennial spices, because you can buy a plant, plant it in your yard, and then basically leave it alone and it will come back every year (rosemary, thyme, sage, etc--or even bulb stuff like onions or garlic). Berry bushes are great in this regard as well. If you spend your first spring/summer planting perennial plants, then you will have a great start forever.

Next summer if you want to grow something easy, tomatoes are great. You can buy a couple of plants and plant them in your garden, and they will produce tons of tomatoes for months, which you can eat, or make sauces out of, or freeze or whatever.

I'd say stuff like that is the best jumping-off point.

:-)
