Without Vaccine, Australia Shrugs Off Swine Flu.

By David M. Burd

With no vaccine available for H1N1 flu, Australia recently ended its 2009 "Flu Season" (their Winter in our Summer), with 186 flu-associated fatalities of 36,991 Aussies confirmed having H1N1.

The Australia 2009 stats for regular 'seasonal flu' are not final yet, but their Health Dept literature cites annual flu-associated mortality historically has been between 2,500 and 3,000  in spite of universal  vaccination programs for regular flu long being established.  A logical review of these results strongly suggests next year Australia should initiate a "flu vaccination holiday," promote vitamin D supplements, long known to be effective for preventing Wintertime flu disease, and then compare the outcomes.

Pertinently, experts have also stated that H1N1 was probably already in Australia for their 2008 flu season, but not tested for (which is the nature of the testing world; a great percentage of "flu" cases being presumptive, never tested).  In light of Australia clearly showing the pussycat nature of H1N1, can somebody explain why America's media willfully ignores the news from Australia?  However, despite the derelict media, I would think U.S. Health Generals would certainly be up on Flu news from Down Under, and certainly from Canada right next door.

Canadian front page news on flu vaccinations has transfixed Canada health authorities, prompting official suspension of regular flu vaccination programs until further notice.  This comes from a sweeping study of Canada by research Doctors Danuta Skowronski of the British Columbia Centre of Disease Control and Gaston De Serres of Laval University in Quebec concluding Canadians receiving flu vaccinations have twice the risk of coming down with the flu, compared to those who do not take the shot.

In a bizarre five-hour worldwide teleconference held by the World Health Organization October 4 on the Skowronski/De Serres Study, U.S. doctors offered the opinion that the Canadian doctors' flu vaccination study was certainly wrong and must have used flawed study parameters, though the U.S. doctors admittedly could not identify anything specific.  To paraphrase the U.S. attitude: 'Damn the vaccination studies, flu speed ahead!'

In view of all this, America wakes up Sunday, Oct. 25 to headlines of President Obama proclaiming Saturday that H1N1 Flu is now under a National Health Emergency.  Perhaps, Obama's rhetoric is no coincidence as it is well known most Americans have been rejecting their invitations to show up for their shots.  And maybe, American mothers and fathers realize there are indeed catastrophic risks associated with vaccinations, particularly since CDC says their kids should be marched in for shots, regardless of CDC admitting the shots contain full amounts of mercury preservative.  And, I am not making this up: CDC astonishingly insists that the mercury in vaccines brings no risk whatsoever to kids.

Three related conclusions come to mind:

(1) My hat is off to the public, thinking for themselves.  Huraah!!

(2) Obama's health advisor Harry Varmus, NIAID chief Tony Fauci, HHS Secretary Sebelius, CDC Director Thomas Frieden, CDC Commander Anne Schuchat are so zealously dedicated to Herd Control of Americans they willfully ignore the honest, financially independent, most available information on Planet Earth: Australia's just ended Flu Season, and the study in Canada by Doctors Skowronski and De Serres (and other studies that reinforce their conclusion). U.S. health officials promoting unwarranted epidemic fears and manipulation of H1N1 flu deserve permanent mail room duty on the international space station - at best.

(3) President Obama illustrates perfectly the medically-ignorant political animal, craving to be seen as a Medical Hero in the national spotlight, while willfully ignoring abundant proof of brain damage and other permanent disabilities to millions of children by vaccines' mercury and other toxic ingredients cavalierly injected in such as the H1N1 vaccine.

HOAX

http://leftbrainrightbrain.co.uk/?p=3493

On October 27, AoA posted an article titled “Without Vaccine, Australia Shrugs Off Swine Flu”, By David Burd. This article consists of a string of claims clearly at odds with reality:

“(Australia has) no vaccine available for H1N1 flu…”

The University of Queensland claimed to have manufactured the first litre of an H1N1 vaccine made in Australia on June 29, 2009. Large-scale immunization began on September 28.

“Australia recently ended its 2009 `Flu Season’ (their Winter in our Summer), with 186 flu-associated fatalities of 36,991 Aussies confirmed having H1N1.”

Australian authorities openly acknowledge that their “official” numbers are very incomplete. Many possible cases have gone unconfirmed, due to limited resources and the rapid accumulation of reports. It is possible that a significant number of deaths went intentionally unreported, to circumvent government rationing of antiviral drugs. In any event, H1N1 is presumably still spreading, as the number of officially acknowledged cases has continued to grow. On October 26, the day before Burd’s article was posted, a new report acknowledged 37,039 cases, 48 more than the Oct. 21 report which provided Burd’s figure.

“Canadian front page news on flu vaccinations has transfixed Canada health authorities, prompting official suspension of regular flu vaccination programs until further notice.”

What actually happened is that authorities in one province of Canada decided not to give the H1N1 vaccine to those over 65 H1N1 vaccine production and distribution has not stopped and may accelerate. A Canadian commenting on an earlier essay of mine has said, “The only temporary suspension that occurs is when we run out of vaccines…”

“This comes from a sweeping study of Canada by research Doctors Danuta Skowronski of the British Columbia Centre of Disease Control and Gaston De Serres of Laval University in Quebec concluding Canadians receiving flu vaccinations have twice the risk of coming down with the flu, compared to those who do not take the shot.”

The study in question did not claim that receiving an H1N1 vaccine increased the risk of H1N1 infection, which is almost certainly what Burd wishes to imply. Rather, it claimed that those who had received the seasonal flu vaccine in 2008 were at higher risk of catching H1N1 during the following year. Skowronski openly admitted that an actual causal relationship is open to debate.

“(On Oct. 4) U.S. doctors offered the opinion that the Canadian doctors’ flu vaccination study was certainly wrong and must have used flawed study parameters, though (they) admittedly could not identify anything specific.”

No later than September 26, CDC spokesman Joe Quimby stated, “(S)cientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have not seen this effect in systems we have reviewed in the U.S.

The most benign interpretation of this article is that Burd has credulously accepted a number of possible “urban legends”. I think there can be little doubt that modern “legends” are involved. I find the claim that H1N1 vaccination has been suspended in Canada, in particular, plausible as a “real” Canadian rumor. Bogus reports of current or impending changes in US government policies are a common type of “urban legend” in the US itself, and it is only to be expected that other nations would be subject to similar lore. But, such bogus reports often merge into hoaxes and scams. (A commonly aired suspicion is that individuals or groups create or promote legends about their enemies.) I am inclined to interpret Burd’s article (and AoA’s publication of it) as more in the vein of a hoax. Even if they more or less believe the story, it is hard to regard its posting as anything but cynical posturing.

Urban legends about H1N1 and its vaccines are already being noted, as in a chain email about a hospital supposedly warning staff not to be vaccinated. Such rumors can be recognized questioned promptly by looking for the following “clues”:

1. The report is more like a personal narrative than “news”, particularly in giving very specific details about people and events without specific dates, locations, etc.
2. The narrative, or a part thereof, is attributed to someone other than the immediate source or an acquaintance thereof (the infamous “friend of a friend” tale!)
3. The narrative features what I call a “phantom quote”: a sensational statement by a supposedly authoritative but unnamed or unfamiliar source.
4. Statements by named and familiar sources are not easily found or verified, for example being without a given broadcast or publication date, or especially being allegedly censored before wide distribution.
5. You have already heard a similar story with differences in key details.

By recognizing such clues, one can recognize a fundamentally suspicious story even before trying to verify it independently. Being on guard at first hearing may well be a better defense against the spread of disinformation than any amount of subsequent investigation.

A hoax? Really? I can see where the author of the AoA piece showed his bias against the vaccine in the way he worded his article but to call it a hoax? nope.  The author of your piece hardly disproved the fact that AU had a mild flu season without a vax.. in fact he hardly gave it any effort at all.  Weak argument on the topic itself, strong deconstruction the bias behind the piece. Thanks for sharing anyway.

The University of Queensland claimed to have manufactured the first litre of an H1N1 vaccine made in Australia on June 29, 2009. Large-scale immunization began on September 28.

Yes, they began a wide spread vaccination campaign recently (the end of Sept. AKA they end of their flu season) but the flu season was spent WITHOUT the vaccine.

Australian authorities openly acknowledge that their “official” numbers are very incomplete. Many possible cases have gone unconfirmed, due to limited resources and the rapid accumulation of reports.

or maybe also due to the fact that it was mild and needed no hospitalization, thus no report? Incomplete does not mean incorrect.  I doubt that there is that much of a difference between the "official" and unofficial numbers but we shall wait and see right?

On October 26, the day before Burd’s article was posted, a new report acknowledged 37,039 cases, 48 more than the Oct. 21 report which provided Burd’s figure.

48 cases in all of Australia in 5 days, WOW! Please note that is sarcasm.  How many people are in AU again?

Australia is late to the game, but acting responsibly.

http://www.healthemergency.gov.au/internet/healthemergency/publishing.nsf/Content/health-swine_influenza-index.htm

The continent of Australia is the least densely populated on the plant (save Antartica) at Australia - 6.4 people per square mile.  The total population is 21MM, less than Canada.  An infection rate of 38 per 21,000 is more than 0.18%, possibly attenuated by the relative spacing or people and modern standards of the country - although reports of aboriginals being more impacted by H1N1 are surfacing.

http://www.mapsofworld.com/australia/thematic-maps/population-of-australia/australia-population-density.html

Read the raw data for yourself - what Burd misrepresented was that Australia had no impact as a "vaccine free" nation.  Completely untrue.

http://www.healthemergency.gov.au/internet/healthemergency/publishing.nsf/Content/ozflu2009.htm/$File/ozflu-no24-2009.pdf

Two relevant facts -

As of 23 October 2009, the number of deaths associated with pandemic (H1N1) 2009 was 186. Of these deaths, 3 were pregnant women and 24 (13%) were Indigenous.

The median age of confirmed cases that died is 54 years (range 2-92 years of age), compared to the median age for deaths from seasonal flu from 2001 to 2006 which is 83 years.

In short, in addition to 186 people, 3 healthy pregnant women and their unborn child(ren) died due to this illness.

I'm sorry I still disagree that 186 deaths is a significant number in comparison to the predicted number of 3000.  .1%? I would hardly call that a blip. How many people die of complications of the seasonal flu in AU each year?  Um, that would be between 1000 and 3000.  So yeah this year was pretty darn mild imo.

I do not see how age is relevant to the argument at hand.  It is an interesting tidbit but irrelevant to the topic, it has already been established that the people effected by this particular strain tend to be younger.

You avoid direct questioning well I must say. I want you present a good argument for vaccination, I honestly do, but thus far I am just seeing obfuscation and strong rhetoric (fear mongering).  Be reasonable, not all people that question vaccines are idiots as you seem to believe. If you want to convince someone that is skeptical of the vaccination program to vaccinate you are going to have to do better than this. Much better imo.
