I first want to say it has been very nice to have found this site. it has really helped me a lot. Ok so my Dh and I have been researching the places to get a VR Surgery. We are from WA State and my dh's Vasectomy is about 10 years old. We have looked at different doctors. Cost is an issue with us as it is with a lot of people. We found Dr. Finnerty in WA. He runs about 5000 dollars. We also found Dr. Roeder who is 2200 dollars, but my husband is worried that it will cost more with him because of airfare, hotel, and such. We are trying to figure out if it would be cheaper to use a doctor far away or cheaper to use the closer doctor. Wonder how much it cost people to use a doctor they had to travel far too and how long they had to stay at a hotel before we could go home? Did any husbands go alone to save on cost? Not that I really want my husband to go alone, but with cost and my work just not sure. This would be for me to have my first child and my husbands second child. We hope we could do this in January since my husband works in the grocery industry and that is the best time. Sorry it is so long.

Welcome to the board!!

I think cost is very much an issue for most people. But if you break it down with regards to finances, I think you might find that traveling isnt more expensive.

VR - $2200
Airfare for 2 RT - ~ $500
Hotel stay for 2/3 nights - ~ $400
Rental Car for 3 days - ~ $200
Food and other incidentals - ~ $300

Total cost to travel - approximately $3500 with Dr. R.

Good luck in making the decision on where to go. Keep in mind that if you can swing it, hotels and airfare are cheaper midweek.

Hi...we too debated which would be cheaper, to travel or stay close to home. We chose to travel from VA to Ok. We only stayed one night after the VR, although 2 nights was recommended. My husband did fine, and it worked out really well, and did not cost us nearly as much. Another deciding factor for us was that there was not any Doctors close that specialized in VRs. We were very pleased with our decision, we used Dr. Wilson, and I got pregnant the first cycle after the VR. Blessings as you make a decision about this. I wish you the best.

We traveled for ours. We decided to drive as we took our 4 boys with us. We drove from MI to OK. Our surgery plus trip was about $2,600. That included food, 4 nights of hotels (1 night each way of traveling and 2 nights in OK), gas & the surgery.

We drove from WI to OK. I'm going to round up on what we spent for travel. We found that after 2 RT flights rental car and food it was cheaper to drive plus we wouldn't be tied to a flight if DH felt like he wanted to rest or stay an extra night. We could take our time. DH had a weeks vacation so we took that.

The VR 1700
Stayed at La Quinta 80.00, we drove all night to get there so no hotel on the way there. We stopped and stayed the night at my moms on the way home.
Gas 350.00
Food and misc. 150.00 So I would guess it could cost up to 3000-4000 depending on you situation.

I know some DH have gone alone and we did have that thought too. I'm glad we didn't go that route . DH was way to loopy to drive even the next day he was out of it a bit. Not to mention that he couldn't understand a word of what the Dr. was saying after the VR due to the meds he was given to relax. He was feeling well enough to drive by END of the second day. So if he stayed 2 day then drove home he might be ok. But you would have to have someone drive him to and from the Dr. office. Also someone would have to fill his prescription for the antibiotics. Plus I knew I would sit and worry about the whole thing while he was gone. I'm glad he didn't go alone!
