Cindy ~
Is there any chance your DH can get light duty at work? The VR doc will give a medical note for the employer if needed. I do not believe medical leave is paid until you have been on the job for at least 12 months. Otherwise it is unpaid. Check with your DH's HR department to get the specifics.
Ideally, your DH would want to stay off his feet for the first several days with lots of ice on and off for the first 3-7 days. An athletic supporter is a definite non negotiable during the first 2 weeks. Encourage him to continue the supporter even if it is uncomfortable. It will ensure the "boys" stay still amidst all the day to day activities allowing them to heal without too much added trauma.
If possible, I would try to get the VR done on day 1 of his 6 consecutive days off and then maybe try for a vacation week after that. Usually by 2 weeks out the DH's are feeling pretty well back to normal.
I hope you can find a compromise with DH, the VR, work and all the other things involved.
