Vasectomy/Tubal Reversal Journey

Our 3 month SA is coming up next month and I'm looking into ordering collection condoms for it. I'm so confused...can I use a regular condom with Preseed or do we need to buy the special collection condoms at $10 a pop?

How does the testing work? Do we have to BD, then zoom over to a Quest lab right after?

Hi Autumn!  I don't know about the preseed vs special collection condom.  If you are planning on BDing as a method of collection you will have to BD and get there quickly.  From our first experience, you may want to check on how quickly they process once you arrive.

I only just recently realized that our first SA was not processed until almost an hour after it arrived - well within their one hour time limit but with our twenty minute commute, not soon enough.  This may have resulted in some falsely lower numbers.

we are doing a second SA where DH will produce the sample at the lab - not so romantic but at least it'll be within the time frames.  Good luck!!

I agree with Stacey. Definitely check with the lab and ensure you can meet their time requirements if collecting the sample at home.

Also, the collection condom is most likely the best method since the sample is supposed to be collected into a sterile container. Regular condoms may not be the best when it comes to sterile environments. (MHO)

I know my DH had always done the samples at the lab with the exception of the last one...he had me "assist" with the collection at home....it was also our worst sample than the others of him giving the sample at the hospital lab.

Be prepared that each and every sample may produce differing results with some counts being lower than others, motility variations and even volume variations. Some of the ladies have indicated that the volume and results are worse when DH presents sample on demand at the lab and that results are better with a more "natural" collection process.

Also keep in mind, that most if not all labs will not accept the collection condom, and instead you and DH would have to transfer the contents to the sterile lab specimen cup.

I know our hospital lab is about 5 or so minutes away...but I dont think there will be any future SA's for us. I just dont think it will be something I could get DH to do.
