Question about 1st C-section

I posted this question on my playgroup board, but didn't get a whole lot of response and someone recommended this board.

Those mom's that had a VBAC (after even 1 c-section) what was the reason for the initial c-section?

I think I was pushed into my c-section (it was obvious that my nurse did not think it was necessary and the Dr. pushed me into it). I had pushed for 3 hours but the baby hadn't descended far enough to use forceps or a vacuum or anything to get him the rest of the way out. They were concerned about his heart rate, but the nurse swore it was just the placement of the monitor when I had contractions. I am thinking that next time around I want to do it natural, but not sure if it is possible. I had a really bad experience with my c-section (the Dr. nicked my bladder and I had to have a catheter for over a week) and I'd rather avoid it next time.

Thanks!

I had a CS for a very different reason. My DD was Breech and I attempted an external version to have her turned but it wasnt successful and ended up causing my placenta t rupture and I had to have an emergency CS. DD will be 19 months old when I am due with baby #2 and I am attempting a VBAC. I am just praying this baby goes head down so I get a fair chance to VBAC! Good luck! I feel very strongly about being given the chance to VBAC and I hope you give it a chance and are successful! :)

A lot of people believe they were rushed into a c-section for one reason or another. Me, I had HELLP syndrome, and believe my c-section (at 34 weeks) was fully justified. I did have the second child full term and unmedicated, and that may have helped me avoid a second c-section. (My OB wasn't on duty, and the on-call was hostile to the idea of a VBAC from the beginning, but nothing happened to justify one.)

I'm of two minds on this issue. My c-section was a real surprise to me-- my waters broke 2 days before my due date (a surprise in itself, since both I and my midwives thought that I'd go late). After about 20 hours, my contractions slowed down and I was told that I'd need to go in for an induction. At the hospital, we found out that my DD was breech, and I was told that I would need a c-section.

I still wonder what would have happened if I'd been given more time to labor after my waters broke (some midwives are ok with going 48 hours), since I think that my worry about the "time clock" got in the way of my contractions. I was also never told that vaginal breech birth was even possible (my daughter was frank breech, and was therefore at very low risk of cord prolapse). Still, if my providers weren't experienced in catching breech babies, I wouldn't have wanted to risk it, so the c/s would probably have happened anyway.

In terms of your situation, if the c/s was done due to fetal decels, I'm guessing that you'll be a great candidate for VBAC-- you've proven your body's ability to get to 10 cm!

Thanks for sharing. Yes, everything went normally up until that point and I think the same thing may have happened to me. I was paranoid about the clock. I think I want as little intervention as possible next time. No pitocin, which I initially refused but they pushed me into because they say my contractions were not strong enough before the (even though I was 4 cm when I checked in) and I will definitely make a go of it without an epidural. I don't know if I can handle 3 hours of pushing without one again though! LOL

I have my yearly exam next month and I'm going to bring it up to my dr. then to see what she says. She is much more supportive than the dr. that was on call when I was ready to push.
