Hi. I am new to this board and have a few questions. DH and I have been vegetarians for over 6 years and although I am struggling with staying a veg. we want to raise our son a veg. We choose not to drink cows milk although we do eat milk products and I was wondering if when my son turns one do we HAVE to give him cows milk instead of formula? He is allergic to Soy so I don't think that is an option to start out with.We drink rice milk, fyi. I am a FTM so this is all new to me. ALso, like I said I am a struggling vegetarian. I am bored with food and think about and crave chicken all the time. I just want some of mu homemeade chicken noodle soup with real chicken broth*sigh*. Any ideas on how to get back on the veg. wagon??? Thanks! -April

I think if you're not going to give him cow's milk, you do need to supplement his fat intake.  I nursed my DD until she weaned (sadly) about a month ago.  I still supplemented her fat intake though.  I mainly use flax seed, almond butter and avocados.  We eat a very low fat vegan diet.  You could also try using a stage 2 formula (it would have cow's milk in it though).  If it were me, I would do rice milk and make sure he gets extra fat in his diet until the age of 2.

My DD has oatmeal every morning.  I put a scoop of almond butter, scoop of flax seed in it and I use rice milk to prepare it.  She's getting a nice bit of fat from that each day.

Sorry if this was all over the place!  I'm in a hurry but wanted to write you something!  :o)  Welcome to the board!!!!!!!!!!  You should check out our recipes for some new inspiration!!!!!!!!  :o)  Hope to see you around more!!!!!!!!

I was just thinking that if you do other dairy, he will get fat from that too.  So that could be a source for him as well.

Welcome to the board. Definitely you don't have to give your baby cow's milk just because he turns 1, although too many people in our culture think so. The fat is really the important part, as well as calcium, but there are plenty of great ways to get these nutrients from vegan sources. Of course, if you're just not having him drink milk, there's cheese & other dairy possibilities. You can get many of these things without hormones and antibiotics; I believe animals in these situations usually have a better life than those in standard factory farms, if that's a concern for you. I would recommend you get a copy of "Raising Vegetarian Children" by Joanne Stephaniak; she includes recipes, charts etc in that book, helping you figure out how to give your child what he/she needs.
When you're wanting something not vegetarian, I'd recommend trying a little vegetarian specialty foods; my 10 year old loves Morningstar Farms chik'n patties and nuggets- I don't allow them too regularly though because they have egg whites & milk in them, as well as high sodium.

Thank you Meredith and Joelle. I have ordered the book and am looking forward to it coming. I am hoping it will give me some great ideas. My son had 2 different reactions to soy and we HAD to use milk based formula. I really just don't want all the hormones and anitbiotics plus I know dairy cows aren't happy even though they live in California. But since I eat dairy products isn't it sort of the same thing??? It takes milk to make cheese, right? Hmmm, this has got me thinking now,LOL.
