Hi. I have been a vegetarian for over 6 years and would like to have new things for protien.Beans just don't sit well with me and I have tried beano but it gave me no help,LOL. I get tired of the fake meat products. DH suggests I should get a low calorie protein shake but I enjoy eating and don't want to waste my daily calories on a drink. I eat oatmeal almost daily is there something tasty but not too high in calories that I could add? I also turned into the caloie nazi about 3 months ago when I was fed up with still having my baby weight.Since then I have been tracking my calorie intake on sparkpeople.com and thats when I realized I do not get enough protein. I have since then lost it but would like to lose another 5-10. I like tofu most of the time but get bored with that too. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First off, what do you feel like is the ideal intake of protein?  The World Health Organization recommends that 5% of your daily calories come from protein.  So that's about 25-35 grams a day.  Very easily attained.

Do all beans have the same effect on you?  There are many varieties, maybe some with softer skins would work better for you?

Rice, potatoes, and corn are all great starch sources of protein.  Asparagus, broccoli, and spinach are great veggie sources.

That's great that you've lost weight!!!  I've always found calorie counting too restrictive and I usually feel hungry a lot.  I've had a lot of luck with eating a low fat plant based (vegan) diet.  I do basically have to cook everything from scratch and leave out all oils, but I can eat as much as I want and not worry about gaining weight.

Something you might want to try is some of the "primitive grains" like amaranth, quinoa. If you google that phrase "primitive grains" you might even find more grains and recipes. The grains that fit under this phrase tend to have more protein in them than, say, wheat or other grains you're more familiar with. You could also try making your own bread at home using recipes that include "vital wheat gluten," which adds protein to the bread.
Since you don't identify as a vegan, I wonder if you would be willing to try getting some of your protein from dairy sources. Although as a vegan, my first thought is with "uncheeses." Especially from the book "The Uncheese Cookbook" by Joanne Stephaniak, which is always on my kitchen table and in constant use, many of the "cheez" recipes include some sort of nut, which brings protein as well as healthy fats.

Hi. I'm delurking. I am the mom of three vegetarian daughters(one of my dds isn't veg and dh and I aren't either. One of my veg dds is a competitive gymnast so protein intake is very important for her. She eats lots of eggs, cheese, nuts of all kinds, and greek yogurt is an excellent source of protein. The Greek yogurt I have given to her has 30% rda of protein per serving. Hope this helps.
