"Fake" meats for toddlers?

I'm sorry if this has been discussed to death in here, but I'm new to the board and just wondered what your opinions are on soy "chicken" nuggets and other meatless meats for kids?

My 10 month old eats mainly veggies, beans, yogurt/cheese and whole grains but about once a week I've been giving her a fake chicken nugget to try. She LOVES them. Am I doing something wrong? I'm not concerned about the soy element because I know there are some babies on soy formula and they turn out fine.

BTW, we are a lacto-ova family and she also gets Similac Organic milk-based formula. Thanks!

We don't do the "fake" meats for anyone in our family.   I also actively avoid isolated soy proteins - this article explains why:

All in all, I would think moderation is the best policy in regards to soy....the isolated soy proteins, well I'm just not so sure of personally.   It's easy for me to  stay away from the fake products since I really don't have an "craving" for them, if that makes sense.

welcome to the board :)
The isolated soy proteins are less of an issue for me then remluc; my issue is with the sodium. I use any of the fake meats in moderation even for myself since most are high in sodium. However, I wouldn't be too worried with once a week usage as you're doing. Have you thought though of making some of your own? Like fake chicken nuggets? Here's a link to an article and a recipe for homemade seitan (say SAY-tan) http://www.vrg.org/recipes/vjseitan.htm As the article mentions, you can buy prepared seitan now, but it's not too hard to make it yourself. "Gluten flour" is also called "vital wheat gluten"- I get mine at Meijer (a superstore chain in the midwest)
