DS saying his penis hurts?

My DS is almost 3 years old and is now fully potty trained. Occasionally(no more than once a day or 2) he will grab himself and say "my penis hurts!", but he does not cry or carry on. The foreskin is not red and does not look any different. I have noticed that his foreskin balloons out VERY much when he pees. So, maybe separation is starting? How long should I let him say this w/o checking with his Dr. I can't see what she would do, b/c there is no visible damage and she won't retract him. Thanks for the help!

Hopefully some of our guys will chime in, so my advice is just mom to mom...

But, I'd not worry about it.  I have 4 nephews (all circ'd unfortunately), and each of them when through the penis grabbing phase where they were more aware of it, talked about it, grabbed it, you name it, they did it.  If there is no redness, discharge, etc, I'd leave well enough alone.  I would imagine is increased awareness of it, and the liklihood that separation has started is enough for him to comment about it.

If it truly did hurt I would imagine it would at least be red, or he would fuss about it rather than mention it casually.

My experience has been that "my penis hurts" (or itches or feels funny or is bugging me) is small boy code for "I want to play with it but you said I can't in public."

If he doesn't elaborate, you can either ignore it or, if you're still worried, ask him "what kind of hurt" and see if there really is an issue or if this is just an excuse for being hands-on.

We went through this during separation. I'm sure it may feel funny or actually hurt. It would usually stop within a few minutes, or I would put "medicine" on it (I use lansinoh since it is so inert and harmless) He was always happy with the "fix" of putting a dab on the end LOL.

Don't worry it's completely normal and as long as there is no redness, discharge, smell, fever all of the normal infection signs you are fine!

It could be that [separation]. Does he only mention it when urinating or does he just say so at some random time. If it is the former, it could be the ballooning itself. The thing is that if it's ballooning it is clearly separated but it might be that not all parts have done so. So when he balloons it would be slowly forcing apart the sections still attached and they might be a bit raw. When the urine is there it could sting. I think this will be a transient thing for him but please keep us informed. If it happens at a random point in the day perhaps he is having erections that due the same kind of thing, pull tight or apart sections, that are still attached making it a bit sore. Those would be the two possibilities that immediately come to mind.
