I now have a few other questions. Grady is now almost 5 months old already! He absolutely does not like a wet diaper, he will not nurse or sleep in even a minorly peed in diaper (thank goodness for cloth diapers!), and lately will let me know before he goes... especially during the night. Is this normal? I am pretty sure it is not a UTI, or he would cry all the time. A few people have told me I should start potty traing him already because he does this. What does everyone else think?

Grady at five months would by law of average be quite young to grasp potty training but averages are made up of all extremes. If he is ready to cooperate I feel it would behoove you to take advantage of an otherwise good thing. Less diaper washing, bed wetting etc.

No child enjoys laying, setting or walking in a wet diaper that I have ever observed.  He may be a bit more vocal about it then others but spent urine has the potential of causing various discomforts. If any form of rash is present it can burn from the acidity which can also irritate the meatus and/or the tip of his foreskin. Drinking acidic fruit juices for instance can raise the level in the urine. The cold feeling soon after a diaper is wet can be a source of complaint as well. If a dry diaper cures the complaints/restlessness then I certainly would not be concerned about a UTI.

Get him a step stool, throw some popcorn or cheerios in the toilet to aim at and see how young you can have him in underwear.

There are many cultures that potty train much younger than us. I remember talking to a mom from India who was lost about potty training, when she asked her mother, her mother was aghast that at 2 her daughter didn't go on her own and said something to do with not wearing diapers in India etc. Chaos then erupted at Storytime and we never finished the conversation.

I did a quick google and found these.

A couple of interesting articles you linked to. Most all of Asia's babies and toddlers go without bottom clothing. Either none or cloths with a slit in the back that automatically opens when squatting. I observed plenty of it while serving there as a Combat Medic. The pooper scooper clean up brigades keep busy to maintain any semblance of proper sanitation.

These people obviously have discovered the training door of opportunity starts at a very young age. Can't argue against success.

Thank you for your replies! I will keep thinking about it. He seems to be early with quite a bit already, so maybe I should try it.
