Starting to wean from pump....

I can't say that I'm too sad as I start thinking about weaning from the pump..... :)

My freezer stash is getting out of hand and I'd like to stop pumping all together right around Christmas. I've been doing two pumps a day for about the last month - netting about 6-10oz. which is still more than DS is taking.  Do you think it's safe to go to one pump now and just keep that up until Christmas?  DS is still reverse cycling and is taking about 4-8 oz. a day when I'm gone, and he's usually only nursing once or twice during the day when I'm home, so I can't imagine I'll be engorged by this point, right?  I'm not worried too much about keeping up with him at this point - I have plenty in the freezer to make up for any shortfalls.  I do still want to be able to nurse on the weekends, though.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure what your currently pumping schedule is, or how flexible it is to change, but what I did when I weaned from the pump was I slowly moved my morning pump which was usually between 9 and 10 later and later in the morning and then my afternoon pump I started moving a little later in the afternoon, but really focused on pumping for less time during that afternoon pump.  So instead of going at 9:30 and 2, I would go at 10 and 3 for a week or two, and instead of pumping for 10-12 minutes at each session, the afternoon session I would only pump for 7 minutes and then after 2 weeks of that I would go at 10:30 or 11 and 3 and the 3 pump I would only pump for 5 minutes and then after a few weeks of that i just eliminated the 3:00 pump and just pumped around noon each day.  I still had times when on a Monday or after a long weekend, I would be more engorged and need to be more flexible with my schedule.  Once I HUTH, I had no problems with nursing just in the evenings and weekends.  Your body should adjust just fine to it.

Thanks. Right now, I'm pumping at like 10:00/3:00 or 10:30/3:30. I was hoping to cut it down to one lunch-time pump. I work 8-4 and take lunch around 11:30, so I'd be pumping around 11:30-12:00.

I think that's a good idea - I'll start only pumping for like 10 minutes on my 3:00 pump and then gradually cut it off.  I'd love to be down to one pump by the end of the month (since I'm starting to get busy at work).

Thanks again~

Given your schedule already, you really shouldn't have much of a problem at all moving to just one pump by the end of the month.  But yes, just doing less of a pump in the afternoon should work nicely for you so its not such an abrupt wean.

Tracy had some good suggestions for how to do the weaning process.  I didn't have to wean b/c DD hit 1 when I was on my winter break ;)

It sounds like you have a very workable plan, and since you're close to a year, you shouldn't really have problems w/ your overall supply, especially w/ a reverse cycler :)
