Hi everyone. I'm Jenn and a new mom to Mateo who will be 5 weeks tomorrow. I have a Medela pump in style advanced. I have tried pumping a few times and have only gotten 1/2 oz or less from each breast every time. I have tried pumping at different times of the day and before and after feeding DS. I'm supposed to go back to work in a week or two and have nothing in the freezer. We started supplementing formula a week ago. 2 oz 2x a day. I'm worried that if I don't get a supply in the freezer that DH will just have no cjoice but to give Mateo formula the whole time I'm at work. we apparently have different parenting types so he doesn't see the huge deal. WHAT can I do??

Welcome Jenn!!!!  Glad to have you join us!

May I ask why you're supplementing Mateo w/ formula?  If you are exclusively BFing on demand, your supply should keep up w/ his needs.  Did you think you weren't making enough milk?  It's *very* rare to not make enough milk.  You can't judge your milk supply by things like -not feeling engorged -fussiness (most babies are fussy, especially in the evenings, and they like to cluster feed) -not pumping a lot (average output from both breasts when pumping *in addition to* BFing is .5-2.5 oz).  As long as he's making several wet diapers a day, pooping regularly (though at 5 weeks, poop frequency can slow down), and growing, then you're making enough milk.  And every time you feed formula instead of BFing, you're telling your body you don't need so much milk, so your supply will drop.  I would suggest, if your goal is to BF as much as possible, that you gradually cut back on the formula supplements with the goal of exclusively BFing.  HERE'S a kellymom article on doing that.

Keep in mind, also, that you don't have to have a LOT of milk in the freezer to start work, you really only need enough for the first day at work.  Ideally you pump each day for the next day at work.  Don't worry too much about how much you are pumping, b/c again, you shouldn't expect large amounts when pumping *in addition to* BFing.  You will likely get significantly more milk when pumping *instead of* BFing, at work.

I would suggest you pump every morning after a nice warm shower (helps w/ letdown).  You can do it 1/2-1 hour after nursing, or when you get up, depending on your morning schedule.  Morning usually works well b/c supply is usually high in the am.  If you do this reguarly every morning, your body will adjust to "feed the pump" and you should get even more milk at this pumping.  You can keep up the am pump when you go back to work, and on weekends, for extra oz.

In the short term, especially if you're trying to wean off the supplements, you might try some "power pumping."  See THIS LINK for suggestions.

Once you go back to work, you need to stress to DH how important i is to you that Mateo gets *only* breastmilk (assuming you're pumping a reasonable amount, which you likely will), so he needs to be smart about using it.  The temptation is to give the baby a bottle whenever he fusses, but that risks overfeeding, which is a real challenge to a BFing mom.  Check out these two links on bottle feeding the BF baby to reduce the risk of overfeeding #1 and #2.  Expect Mateo to take approximately 1 oz per hour of separation, so probably 8-10 oz for your typical 8 hour workday plus commute.

Above all, don't stress out.  All of us have been in your shoes, and we've all survived, more or less intact ;)  There have been some good threads on suggestions for new moms, so check those out.

Let me know if you have any questions, it's wonderful to "meet" you!!

First off welcome and congrats! I am by no means an expert but I can offer you some advice that I've picked up in my 2 months of pumping =) Others will have some more knowledgabe advice...

1/2 an ounce per breast is completely normal while you're exclusively breastfeeding! Breastfeeding is completely supply and demand, so they usually don't recommend supplementing with formula unless there is a medical need. The more your baby eats, the more you'll make =) Here's a good link with some pumping tips

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/pumping_decrease.html

puming is a practiced art and there are some tips that can help

Everyone has little tricks, these are the ones I have:

Relax, I can't let down if I'm worried about how much I'm pumping... it can be a nasty cycle, you don't pump enough, then you worry that you're not pumping enough and therefore can't relax enough to let down

Look at pictures of your baby or keep your baby near you

Make sure your warm, I have trouble pumping if I'm cold

Make sure you're eating enough and drinking enough water.

And breast compressions... here's the link http://www.kellymom.com/newman/15breast_compression.html

When the pump stops getting anything and I do breast compressions I can usually get another 1/2 an ounce or so.

Try not to worry too much about your freezer stash. I only had about 18 ounces my first day back and was sooo nervous. But if they're feeding your LO correctly http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkcalc.html (Here's the link for how much you hsould need) You should pump enough to cover it while you're away. I know it doesn't seem like it now, but if I remember correctly at 5 weeks my LO was feeding constantly (they have tiny tummies) which never really let my breasts get filled enough for a good pump. While you're at work pumping every 3 hours or so you should get enough time to fill up.

I've got 46 ounces frozen now, and I typically pump enough to cover the next day + 2 ounces or so for the freezer. and I pump before work and leave a fresh bottle. Most women have the highest supply in the morning.

Best of luck and keep us posted

Hi. Thanks for the responses. We had a horrible storm here in CA and I lost power for a few days. Then of course I forgot to check this board. I'm sorry. Well I started supplementing with formula because I thought I wasn't making enough milk. He is still only taking 2 oz 2x a day, once around 7 and 11 pm. He does that either right before or right after nursing. I have started pumping more and am getting better results. It seems like I get 1-2 oz per side. I don't have Mateo on a schedule yet so it's never the same time of day. Mateo is 6 weeks now so I'd like to start some sort of schedule, ie. waking up at a specific time every morning, etc.
I'm worried about pumping at work though. I work in a restaurant, a very small one. I will be pumping in the bathroom as that's the only space that I can go in and lock the door. I will be the only one serving so I can't pump every 3 hours. I also work in the evening. I will go leave for work at 4pm and return home anywhere from 11-1am. I can't very well pump at 7pm in the middle of the dinner crowd. It's just not going to happen. There isn't anyone who can cover for me while I sneak off for a little while. Since I'm not able to pump at specific times, what should I do???

Some of the things I would do when I was on the ambulance and wasn't able to pump on a schedule:

Pump right before you know its going to get busy, even if it isn't 3 hours after your last pump. Even if you only get an ounce or less from each side it will help keep you from getting engourged.

Keep your pump parts together and in your cooler so you can start pumping right away, and then cap the bottles and go.

If you don't have time for a full pump 5 minutes is better than nothing

Wear nursing pads because if you get overly full you may leak.

Work on having him sleep at the time you would normally be at work so he doesn't need to eat as much while you're gone -- even if it isn't a traditional schedule.

Feed him right before you leave and right after you get home.

If you get into a time when you're really full and don't have time to pump hand express in the bathroom for a few seconds -- its better than nothing.

Best of luck! I pump in a bathroom as well and it gets frustrating at time.. all I tell myself is-- its better than when I was pumping in the back of an ambulance with a nursing cover lol

Best of luck =)
