As baby gets older-- pumping frequency

My son is almost 7 months old now..... currently I am pumping twice a day durring my 8 hour shift and only work 3 days a week.

He still takes quite a bit of milk even though we started solids so usually I have to pump the days I am off to get enough. I pump 9 ounces at work and he goes through about 12-16 with the sitter a day.

My question is when can I cut back to one pump a day? Or even no pumping at work? I want to make it to 1 year nursing.... but not sure when i can start backing down the pumps. I would think closer to 1 year but not sure how others have done this. As they get older do they eventually need less milk or is it consistent? So far he has needed the same amount this whole time. 12-16 ounces.

Do most use up their freezer stash at 1 year mark when weaning so that its not wasted?

Thanks so much for your help!  I wish he would reverse cycle but he has never wanted to do that.

Wow, he really is taking a lot each day while you're separated.  If you're working 8 hours, then he's getting 1.5-2 oz per hour, definitely more than the average oz/hr.

Not sure if this will make a difference, but here's a couple links on bottlefeeding a BF baby ... maybe it would cut down on his intake.

Also, you might have your DCP offer solids before EBM, to "stretch" EBM a little.  This is different than what you'll want to do at home:  at home always BF first, so that solids don't replace BFing (which could adversely affect your supply).  On days you work, I would consider not even offering solids at home.

You'll have to play it by ear, but if he continues to eat more than you're pumping while separated, you'll likely need to keep up your current pumping schedule till you're pretty close to a year, unless you had a large freezer stash.

As far as using your freezer stash, as long as you're staying w/in the 6-12 month storage range, you are fine using the milk.  Since my DD reverse cycled to some extent, I didn't use any of my freezer stash till I HUTH at a year.  Then I started using the freezer stash, and she had ~1 bag a day of EBM for the next 11 months.

Spencer, sorry to thread crash but I am curious, you mention 6-12 months for freezer storage, is that for a deep freeze? What about a regular freezer w/ separate door? I thought it was 2 or 3 months, so I was just getting ready to rotate a bunch out. I won't do that if I don't need to though.

As long as your freezer is a separate compartment from the fridge (not one of those old fridges w/ a freezer compartment inside the fridge ... (you probably don't even remember fridges like that, but that's what we had when I was young!  only big enough for 2 half gallons of ice cream and 2 ice trays, lol) ... then you're ok for 3-6 months, according to:  http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkstorage.html

ok thanks! I think I'm ok then. I still have some 3ish month milk to swap out. With Rheanna's being done with 'day nursing' I'm still stock-piling though!
