Well the end of my pumping days are in sight! Kassidy will turn a year old at the end of January so I'm starting to think about how I'm going to wean off the pump. I plan to continue nursing when we are together but I am looking forward to HUTH. So here is my plan... I'd love to hear feedback about if this will work etc.

Right now Kassidy eats about 12oz while I'm away. I work M-Th and drop her off with my dad at about 6:45AM and pick her up at 3:45 so we are apart about 9 hours. On T and Th I go and see her at lunch so there is potential to nurse her then if necessary. Right now I the other side. I then pump twice a day usually at about 9:30AM and 1:30AM.

My plan is to continue sending 12oz through November. In December I plan to stop pumping in the morning and start sending 9oz. In January I am going to only pump once at around 11AM and plan to send about 6oz a day. Then, in February I plan to stop pumping (Yay) and send whatever is left in my freezer stash until it is gone. I'll also introduce cows milk to ease the transition.

What do you think? Will this work?

I'm wondering if it makes sense to cut back on what you send before a year.  It is my understanding that through a year, the primary source of nutrition should be formula or breastmilk.  Just a consideration.  What might work is cutting back a pumping at 11 months.  Chances are you'll get a similar amt as you do now, just in the one pump.  You could try it and see how it goes.  I am planning to stop pumping during the day at the end of December (I have Christmas break, so wouldn't pump anyway.)  I plan to then ease into weaning at that point, knowing it'll probably take awhile.  I am hoping that my supply will hang on, but it seems like most do....

A big thank you to Jill (scrappyjill) for the awesome siggy.

Sigh... I think you are right. Still, don't you think 9oz until she is almost a year old is good for being away from her 9 hours? I always kind of thought my dad was giving her too much but she is growing well so probably not. Ok, you've dashed my dreams of cutting out that stupid morning pump in just a few weeks but I think you are right. So do you think if I just muscle through pumping until I have a week off around Christmas/New Year's and then when I return I will just pump once a day and send whatever I get. I worry I'll only be able to send about 6oz though... would that be ok for an almost one year old?

Okay....here's what I did with DD and this might not meet the approval of some pursists.  :)  Kylie was formula fed, but I would do the same thing with Ryan were it not for his dairy protein intolerance.  I didn't want to introduce regular milk right after her 12 mo appt because I figured for sure I'd start it and determine she had an issue and be right back in the office one to two weeks later.  So, I slowly introduced milk a few weeks before she turned a year.  That would be one idea if you ran out of fresh and frozen bm toward the end of that month....I still wouldn't discount being able to drop down to one pump...Jill dropped some of her pumps recently...maybe she has some ideas...

How much is she eating when it comes to solids right now?  How much of a freezer stash do you have?  And do you think that there is any sort of dairy allergy or intolerance at all?  You about 2 months away from a year, I don't see why if she's eating at least a small amount of solids she couldn't get along with 9 oz. a day come December and if you or your dad felt she needed more, and you are wanting to transition to milk, you can easily add 1 oz. of milk to each bottle she's getting to stretch out the BM each day.  If I remember correctly I dropped down to one pump a day right around 11 or 12 months, but I had enough of a freezer stash at that point where if my supply starting dropping that would supplement it.  We held off on cow's milk until well after 16 months, but that was because of a family milk allergy/intolerance and she still rarely gets cow's milk now.  But that's another story.
