Congratulations and well done to your husband!
Start with something small --- it helps to see something completed to encourage you to go on.
And pick a pattern you LIKE --- no point in stitching Winnie the Pooh if you HATE Winnie the Pooh!
And try to find something with a smaller count to start with (like 14 count or 12 count farbic --- the larger counts like 16 or 18 can be hard on the eyes).
Kits are the easiest things to begin with --- they usually come with everything you will need (even instructions) except a hoop or a frame (and if it's a samll kit, you won't need one of those yet).
Look for Aida cloth (it's easier to learn on) in a light color (stitching on dark colors is ALSO hard on the eyes)...
