Elise is home sick from school today.  She had a fever all weekend, and I don't know what to do with her.  The fever is all she has.  No cough, runny nose, sore throat, tummy ache, nothing!  Her temp has ranged from 99.0 to 101.6.  Right now she's 100.3.  But she feels perfectly fine.  The school policy says that the kids have to be afebrile for 24 hours before they can go back to school, but I feel like this is such a waste!  It doesn't define what fever is, what would you call a fever in a kid.  I'm a nurse and at the hospital 100.3 or above is our defintion.

Hi Stephanie!

First I hope that the fever is gone and Elise is back to school by now!

I am not sure what the school believes a fever is, I think they should put that in their policy and have that policy avalible to parents! I think our school is also the same as the hospital with anything higher than 100.3 being a fever! Sorry this is a few days late!!

I would say anything over 101.3 is a fever. I know two of my kids has that type of virus thing where there was nothing else but a fever but it went away very quickly. I hope it goes away soon so she can return to school soon.

I had this issue last year when they were saying fever free for 7 days and Liam had an abses tooth that was being pulled THAT day and he spiked a fever. I called the dentist and they weren't concerned said probably from the infection and if he's not throwing or pooping he can come in and STUPID STUPIF me said teh F word to the teacher and she's like HE CAN'T BE HERE for 7 days (mind you there were 5 days left and that also meant he could go to his graduation over a fever that was gone in AN HOUR) Lesson learned NEVER tell them it was a fever. I know I'm late but if she's not otherwise sick I'd probably have sent her but don't go by me Liam has to be puking or popping to stay home

Our school is now asking students to be fever-free for 24hrs as well, and defines fever as over 100.3, which I only learned when Evan was sent home several weeks ago with a fever.

I know that in our area there have been several confirmed cases of H1N1 where the only symptom was fever.  Our school really didn't have much of a policy on fevers until that became known.  It's just this year that they've started defining some criteria for staying home and coming back to school.
