Teacher never told us until conference!

I am angry with Sarabeth's school. Apparently not showing up from recess for 10-15min after it ends and only after someone is sent to get her... isn't a big deal to teachers.    For over a month, she has been always 10-15 min late with someone having to go get her, EVERY DAY at EVERY RECESS and someone isnt sent until the teacher notices she isn't there!  So basically 45 minutes a day she is unaccounted for and allowed to play with the 4th & 5th graders!

Not only that... this has been going on for a month and the teacher never told us until our conference the other day!  Over a month and no word about it whatsoever!  Sarabeth had been doing it because she wanted to play longer, even though the teacher had "talked" to her about coming to class on time everyday.  Wow... talking... what a great consequence, that'll work by itself.

If they would have mentioned it waaaay back at the beginning, we could have worked on stopping it instead of waiting for a month later!  Don't get me wrong, she is accountable for her own choices but that is an entirely different matter and we are addressing her lying (saying she followed all the rules everyday) and choices.

HOWEVER, the fact it went on this long IS the teachers/school fault.  We should have been notified ages ago that this was happening!  45 minutes a day of not being accounted for.

I am now waiting for a call back from the teacher to discuss this farther.  We only found out how long of a time she was late when my husband asked her how late she had been being for class (after teacher mentioned being late all the time from recess)

and the teacher said "oh just 10-15 minutes.  ....and I usually am calling the office by then to have someone find her because I am so worried of where she is at."  .........

I admit, i was too stunned yesterday to really get into it more, not to mention having Sarabeth there, I didn't want to get into it then.  I don't want her to get the impression it is someone elses fault and not her own (even if I do hold the school accountable for the lack of notifying).

Sorry just needed a moment to vent!  I cannot believe this has been going on so long without notification.

I'd be livid! A couple times I'd understand, but not every single recess for a month without getting a call. No way!

I would go straight to the superintendent about this because obviously both the teacher and principal knows this has been going on 3 times a day, every day, for a month and have taken no concrete steps to getting this worked out.

Good luck! Lori

UPDATE:

I am so furious now that I have talked to that pathetic excuse of a teacher I can barely type! I cannot even really give an update at the moment because I am so furious.

Needless to say I dont think i will even send my kid to that teacher again.  That is how furious I am at her.

Ill update later when i've calmed down.

OH and here is for a great update.  Sarabeth was on time to classes today after our talk about it yesterday!  Only one was she late, but she tried to come in at time but a boy she has mentioned before wouldn't let go of her arm, she managaed to take his fingers off and ran for class.  I already let her know she dosent have to play with someone who is mean and if he/she wont leave you alone, let a teacher know.  and sadly had to say, and if they dont do anything about it, let me know.

One day of talking to her was all it took for her to do this!

GUESS WHAT ELSE?  THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR.  though according to the teacher, after she realized I was angry, tried saying oh, only every once in a while is it 10-15 minutes... usually its just a few minutes late.  Despite that isnt what she said yesterday at all!!!

EERRRHHH!!!   I'll explain and vent later.

Honestly, I think you need to take more serious action. In writing, I would request a meeting with the principal and the teacher, and I would copy the superintendent. This is so serious. Your daughter is in first grade, for goodness' sake. This is crazy.

We had a vaguely similar issue last year - my son (in third grade at the time) walked home alone through a series of miscommunications. He had a sub, sub sent him to nurse, nurse sent him back to class, he thought he was being sent home and told the sub that, etc.

Anyway, when he came home (scaring me out of my wits when the door opened at 2 PM) I immediately called the school. As soon as my older dd came home (so I had someone to leave him with), I went down. The principal pulled me into a meeting with the teacher ASAP and the nurse would have been there if she hadn't gone home for the day. We reviewed in detail all of the safety procedures, what rules hadn't been followed, etc. The principal fully took all responsibility (although my son should have known not to walk home alone) and made sure safety procedures for subs were updated and implemented. It was a huge deal. The sub was so upset she was crying.

I know that this is different, but heck, we only live a block from school. Your daughter probably could have wandered a block away... Don't they count heads when they go in? COMPLETELY INEXCUSABLE!!  Honestly, I have far more tolerance for teachers forgetting things or being tired or whatever, but for this to go on for months and not involve the parents????

No, you need to get someone higher up involved because this is scary.

Thanks!  And we already have.  We have a meeting with the principal (counselor will be there too) this afternoon and I am not sending our DD to school today either.  I will be requesting a different teacher depending on how this goes, meaning the other option a different school.  The principal seems like she might be level headed and nice though, so we'll see.
