Hey, I'm a foster mom who just had an almost 3-week old placed with me. She was born 9/02.
I'm single so they've always insinuated that the youngest I would probably ever get is a 9 month old. My last one was 10 months old. I have NOTHING for a newborn.
I was not prepared for a child this small. I also got her 4 year old brother, but I'm a little more prepared for that age. Pretty much everything over 6 months I've had a lot of experience with, but not so much the under 6 month set.
I'm already thinking maybe I need a swing or bouncy chair, or one of those slings. What do you guys have right now that you totally can't live without.
I have a playpen with the bassinet attachment so I set that up and put it next to my bed and moved my glider into my room, the 4 year old at the moment is getting his own room.
I picked a few onsies that seem huge on her, she is not quite 7 lbs, some infant bottles and I have some soy formula and some reg. formula. Since she's been constipated I've been finishing off the soy, but I'm not sure if I should try the reg (which I have way more of) or shouldn't switch.
I have two receiving blankets and my friend said she just bought me two more. Is that enough? She responded really well to being swaddled burrito style and while her brother said she takes a binky, she hasn't seemed to need one and I'd prefer not to encourage the habit if I don't need to.
She seems to eat about 2 oz every two hours or so, is that normal?
See, I had about a 1/2 hour to prepare for a newborn and not 9 months so I'm a bit freaked out!
I hope your ok with me crashing your board, I usually hang out on the foster care board and spent quite a lot of time on the 1 year old board, and I didn't see a "I'm frantic I suddenly have a newborn" board.
Thanks, Heidi

Hi Heidi!

Welcome to the board! First of all, I think it's awesome that you are a foster parent. I'm sure you're in shock with this lil newborn but she'll be grown up in no time.As far as the feeding goes, at 3 weeks they should probably be getting an ounce an hour so she sounds right on there. For the formula did they tell you why she was on soy? Is she allergic to the regular milk?If not, I would try to get her on the regular stuff. Also, for down the road a couple weeks I would try to find a swing. Most babies love them and you're able to have your arms free for a little bit. HTH

Hi Heidi,

First of...Kudos to you for what you do!! I have both a swing & a bouncer & she likes both the same. The bouncer is a little more portable. I move it from room to room with me. Mine has a vibrating option which to my baby seems to be the most important function. That calms her down pretty quickly. You really don't need anything fancy. They don't know the difference. I have a nice swing that I rec'd as a gift & then I have a really cheap swing I bought at Wal-Mart & it's all the same to her. The more blankets, washcloths & onesies you can get, the better. It will just keep you from constantly doing little bitty loads of laundry. I got a lot of hers at dollar stores because I knew they'd get ruined & outgrown pretty quickly.

Morgan was 6lbs 4ozs when she left the hospital & at 8 weeks she has just started to outgrow the newborn onesies.  2 ozs every 2 hours sounds perfect. Mine will do that now but she has always been a grazer. If she actually finishes a whole 4 oz bottle, she spits about half of it back up...hee-hee!

I had better luck with the regular formula than the soy but that's just my picky baby. What formula will be easier to come by in the future?? Go with that one. I have binkies but Morgan could take it or leave it. I was worried if I introduced it, it would be a bad thing but she could care less.

OK, munchkin crying....that's all I can think of.

Oh, welcome!! Glad to have you!!

What's her name??

~Lesli~

First of all...Thank you for what you do! I was a foster child for two years and was lucky enough to be adopted at 6 yrs old.

My son loves his swing, so i recommend like the others to get a swing.

Bless you for being a foster parent. We need more of them out there as there are so many lil ones in need. How difficult, and shocking, it must be to be thrown an infant!

I agree with the pp's that a bouncy seat and swing are wonderful to have. If your LO seems to spit up often, I would stock up on some onesies, burp rags and bibs. Otherwise, they really don't need a whole lot at this age. I would also suggest getting the book or DVD of The Happiest Baby on the Block. She is bound to hit a fussy stage soon and those techniques will be very helpful to you in soothing her.
