HOT TOPIC - the Bible/the Constitution
SO I am rereading Mark Levin's Liberty and Tyranny for the book club. (If you haven't read it yet, you still have time! It is not a long book!!! DIscussion starts Monday!) I came across a passage in his chapter on the Constitution and it made me think about the Bible. I thought it might intrigue you ladies the way it intrigued me. This passage comes after some discussion of how the idea of a living and breathing document leads only to anarchy and a bastardization of the founders intent:
"The Conservative seeks to divine the Constitution's meaning from its words and their historical context, including a variety of original sources - records of public debates, diaries, correspondence, notes, etc. While reasonable people may, in good faith, draw different conclusions from the application of this interpretative standard, it is the only standard that gives fidelity to the Constitution."
I agree with this whole-heartedly, as I imagine most of us do. I also believe this as regards the Bible. I have never understood the idea that we have mess with the words of the Bible to make it more applicable to modern day. I figure God was smart to make His words timeless and I am aware that He is WAY smarter than I am.
Furthermore, I believe this country is a gift from God. I am aware that the men who founded this country were WAY smarter than I am and that their faith in God, and humility in the face of His greater power, led them to write a document that could stand the test of time without needing to be living or altered very often or without great pain.
So I have found this intriguing parallel between my faith and my belief in my country. I trust that Jefferson and Adams and Madison knew what they were doing when they wrote the Constitution and I look to their writings, as well as the writings and speeches of people like George Washington, who were living under it at its inception, to know the real intent of the document. And I believe it was a great gift from God. I believe that all the writers of the Bible were rightly inspired and faithful with their words and I look to records of their actions and the writings of people like Iranaeus and Clement and Augustine who were living the faith during its inception and at the time the Bible was assembled. And I believe it was a great gift from God.
Now if only God had put in the Bible that the gates of Hell shall not prevail against America. I could worry less :-P
So, what are your thoughts?
