I am a BTDT...however my first came out looking like a toddler..she was 10 days late and acted as though she had been in the outside world for a long time...besides the fact that she was ginormous, she just seemed "tough" if that makes sense.

This time, my baby came early - at 37 weeks due to pre eclampsia. He was considered full term and was 8lb, 5oz at birth but he shows some minor signs of being early to me.

The most significant thing I notice is that he is very stiff. The doctor said (at his 1 week appointment yesterday) that he shows only VERY MINOR increased muscle tone...but it freaks me out. His arms and legs seem so stiff to me and I dont remember this with my daughter. DH and I JUST noticed today that this seems to be loosening, but barely.

He is also not as alert as I remember her being at this age -- he was born exactly one week ago and his eyes have started remaining open for like 30 minutes at a time...but only recently. He turns to light and away from light (depending on how bright) and will turn towards my voice sometimes but he isn't very alert.

I am so worried this time around. A) I think I know too much and it only freaks me out and B) I have this underlying feeling that my pre eclampsia harmed him in some way. For example, I have been having major concerns about him having CP...things I never dreamed about with DD.

Is your newborn stiff? And what is his/her "eye status"  :)  I feel silly even asking...but I am such a nutcase right now. HELP!

Hopefully my experience can help... this baby was born at 41.5 weeks but my twins were born at 38 weeks. With my twins they slept ALL of the time for the first two weeks, barely any time were they awake with eyes open. This go around he is awake a lot more, like 60 to 90 minutes two to three times a day. Also, my pediatrician said babies shouldn't be stiff as a board or limp as a noodle but anywhere in between is normal. I've noticed this baby is a lot more capable of holding his head up in a shorter period of time then the twins were at this age. Remember too, every child is different and mommies have to have something to worry about. HTH! Hang in there!

I think you just need to give baby some time to mature. My DS was a day late, DD was 2 weeks early, and I too noticed a difference. She was sleepier, and is taking longer to have good head control. 38w is full term, but fo the first few weeks I sort of condidered her *adjusted age* for things too.

hugs

At one week post partum it's common to analyze everything and diagnose your child with things without warrant....and if it's not normal then i guess i'm 'not normal'! lol  I tend to compare my kids too.  My first was overdue and very mature and always way ahead of his peers.  My second was very sleepy, not alert, seemed 'weaker'.  But he's 2 now and sharp as a tack and very athletic for his age!  My newborn, Phoebe, slept 22 hours a day at one week - she was never awake!  When her eyes were open she was cross-eyed!  She is 1 month now and what a difference.  I still 'diagnose' her sometimes and go through phases of worry but i think we all do with newborns.  After all, they are very weird!

i thought the main risk for cerebal palsy was prematurity - and that wasn't really an issue for you.  can't it also affect the placenta?  but that doesnt seem to be an issue in your case either b/c he was obviously getting enough based on his size.

hang in there...i am sure time will reassure you as it will all of us!

Thanks so much for your reply, Melissa --

CP is not only a result of prematurity -- it's generally a result of some sort of injury to the brain during pregnancy, birth, or the period soon after birth (early infancy) -- I keep trying to reassure myself that he hasn't had any injury but I am still nutty...can't seem to shake it.

I think it's mainly that I was so sick ... it's hard to imagine that it DIDNT affect him.

He looks like a frog in his limbs -- the way he sticks them out -- that's the best way I can describe it and it's rather cute, but unfortunately I think I know too much about hypertonia that it makes me worry to death. It was almost easier NOT knowing with my dd. KWIM?

Thanks again for your post...and your willingness to share your experience with your kiddos. It helps. And to think, I always said I would NEVER be one of those parents who compares their kids. YEAH RIGHT...already doing it.
