Any time, or a little whenever the subject of babies comes up. If they're very small (My kids were fascinated with babies at preschool age). What you don't do is lay whatever "baggage" you may have about it on them. "This is what I did; this is why. And now I have 3 wonderful children" You probably want to get most of the story to them before any mangled adoption rumors get to their ears.
I danced around a related problem, explaining that my first child was a c-section, and the second a VBAC. They're more interested in WHAT happened than how you felt about the whole process. I'd mentioned I wanted the VBAC because the c-section was "not fun" but the kids both know they're loved the same.
