In a rare case, a 52-year-old woman gave birth to twins through invitro-fertilisation, recently at a hospital at Ameerpet in Hyderabad.
Married for 25 years, P V S Sharma (56) and P Gayathri (52) did not have a child even after making trips to several clinics and hospitals.
Dr Rama Devi under whose supervision the procedure was carried out, said, "Since Gayathri has crossed 50 years, donor egg method was adopted and after one month, the twin pregnancy was confirmed through ultrasound scanning."
Though some complications cropped up, after an assessment of the growth of the baby and maturity, twin babies were delivered through the lower segment caesarean section (LSCS) at 35 weeks gestational age, she said. The normal gestation period happens anywhere between 38 and 42 weeks.
The premature male twins, weighing 1.9 kg and 1.7 kg after examination were found to be normal with no congenital anomalies.
