Is it gas or Colic?

My baby is now 4 weeks old and we've been dealing with "gas" for the past 2 weeks or so.  Our pediatrician told us to use Mylicon, but that doesn't seem to be doing much for him at this point.  They also told me to stay away from dairy, but that doesn't seem to be working either.  He gets really upset, crying to the point that nothing can console him, usually in the late afternoon.  I can tell that his stomach is hurting-he pulls his legs to his stomach, clinches his fists, and his cry is so pitiful.  My husband and I are doing what we can; rocking him, swadling him, giving him mylicon, burping him-but somethimes, it just seems hopeless.  He hates riding in the car, which is what a lot of people have been telling us helped them.  We feel like it's colic, especially since the mylicon isn't working all that much.  Could it be anything I'm eating?  Any suggestions at this point would be very much appreciated!

please someone give some suggestions! my little evie is 2 weeks old, and i am in the same position! i've probably gotten 3 hours of sleep a night since she was born because after she eats she is so unhappy. it's worse at night, and while i will deal as long as i have to, i am so tired i physically hurt on top of all the post partum aches and pains.

dylansmama...sorry i didn't have any advice to add, but i hope you can find some small comfort in knowing that you aren't alone!

Any suggestions would be great! I'm with you getting only a few hours, it seems like he can only sleep for maybe twenty minutes before waking up and crying again every night, and it's moving to the day as well. :( I hate seeing him in so much pain, and I know he isn't getting enough sleep!

My first one was colicky.  It helped if I went into the bathroom with the fan on and bounced and rocked....or turn on the hair dryer.  The loud noise quiets them for some reason.  My friend used to turn on the vacuum.  We had a toy hair dryer that worked with our 2nd one.  Most babies get fussy in the evenings.  My DS does and he pretty much never cries, but does get fussy in the evenings.  This stage will eventually pass.  Keeping yourself sane during this time is key.  Just pass him off to DH and vice versa and get help if you are both at your wits end.  It's stressful, I know.  Good Luck.

I feel for you! My first DD was colicky and cried pretty much whenever she was awake. This one is gassy with totally different symptoms than DD #1 had, but still is very fussy. So that old saying, "Nobody gets two screamers"? Yeah, well, I did. ;)

One thing I would DEFINITELY recommend is the book "The Happiest Baby on the Block." In short, it recommends the "5 S's" which are:

1. Swaddling
2. Swaying/Swinging
3. Shushing
4. Sucking
5. Side (as in, lying them on their side.)

It absolutely 100% works. Granted, it's labor intensive to do all 5 S's at once, but it beats hearing your baby scream. By the time DD #1 was 2 months old, I even mastered the swaddle and sway with a glass of wine in one hand! lol

Good luck and hang in there...this stage WILL end!
