May 2007 Expecting Club

I meant to ask the ped last week and I forgot.  How long should you nurse?  Serena nurses for anywhere from 20 mins to an 45m mins on each side. During the day she eats every 2 hours and at night we go 3/5-5 hours between nursing sessions.  I keep seeing posts about babies who are done in less than 20 mins.  Am I just becoming a human pacifier or is she eating to fuel her growth?  She is 6 weeks today and last week she was 10 pounds 12.5 oz (born 9 pounds 3.5 oz).

I haven't figured out how to use my Moby D to BF so I feel stuck on the couch when feeding her, and when I run errands it has to be super quick. I'd like to be able to be more productive, YK?

I think it all depends on your flow. Both my boys were finished in less than 20 min but my milk just SPRAYS and they choke on it sometimes lol. I have what you call 'fast flow nipples' ;)

Also depends on how hard they suck and if they are luxuriating in nursing or down to business.

I too have "fast flow nipples" so it's usually only about 5-10 minutes with lots of choking and gasping when the milk lets down. I always feel a little bad while I'm watching DD franticly swallow to keep up and then pull off gasping when she can't (as the milk shoots everywehere!), but it doesn't seem to bother her really.

If she's taken a long nap she occasionally will eat for 20 minutes, but that doesn't happen very often. Also, she only nurses from one side per feeding. I've tried to get her to take the other, but she's just not interested (probably because I'm guessing, based on how much I can easily pump, that she gets a really fast 4-6 oz when the milk lets down LOL!).

DD#1 was exactly the same way so I guess I've been pretty lucky that breastfeeding isn't as time consuming as it is for some moms.

Andrew feeds a LOT more in the day time, but for less time - he always feeds off one breast at one feed, the next at the next feed etc.. and usually only eats for about 10-15 mins every maybe hour - hour and a half when its really hot out, other wise he eats longer (anywjhere up to 30 mins) and goes for about 3 hours! It doesnt sound like hes eatting enough based on the time but he's gaining (11 lbs 8 ounces yesterday, born @ 9-2)he has kots of wet diapers and the Dr. says hes doping well and I am able to get 4 ounces out of my left breast (havent had that luck with the right)  so I know thgeres plenty in there despite how short the feeds seem to be!

 

 

 
 

Noah nurses 10-15 each side. In a bottle, he'll take 7oz of EBM, which seems like a ot! He's eating every 3 hours or so, with spurts of more frequent nursing during the day.
