How to get baby to take meds?

Keira started taking Zantac for her reflux, and she hates it. I tasted it, and I don't blame her, because it doesn't taste too wonderful. It seems like no matter what I do, she spits at least some of it out. I need to get her to take it, because she seems to feel so much better when she actually keeps it down. Are there any special tricks to get a baby to keep medicine in their mouth and swallow? Could it be mixed with something that tastes better?

Try mixing some formula or breast milk in the "syringe" that you put the zantac in. We both BF and formula feed and formula seems to mask the taste better (she keeps it down more easily with the formula, less fighting). I mix 1 ml zantac with an extra 2 ml formula. They say it's best to give it to them straight on an empty stomach 30 mins before they eat - YEAH RIGHT! She spits that right back up. We figure it's best for her to get the meds in her than to follow all those rules, she just doesn't keep it down that way.

Anyway I hope this little trick works for ya. We also noticed a happier baby when she is able to keep the zantac down.

GL!

I've always read to give it to them in their cheek pouch.  Put the syringe far back on the side and it rolls down which makes them swallow.  I've done this and haven't had any issues.

Caleb had to be on antibiotics for a few weeks.  I finally learned that putting the meds in her mouth in the pocket of his cheek seemed to help him swallow it faster and eliminate him choking on it.  Even a few drops placed on his tongue caused him to inevitably choke.

Can't help you about making it taste better (except maybe the flavoring additions they offer at the pharmacy?  I've never tried them so I can't vouch but it's my only idea).  But I hope the placement of the meds might help her swallow it easier.

hugs,

Jen

Ah, there is a trick to it. Buy the "munchkin" medicine dispenser. It looks like a shot glass with a nipple on top of it. Put the meds in there and add some milk to it. The baby ought to suck it right down.

I use it every single day for the twins' vitamins and Reese's meds and it works VERY well. I measure the medicine or vitamins in the syringe and pour it into the munchkin and fill the rest of the 'shot glass' with milk in order for him to take his dose. (I don't mix the meds w/the vitamins, I use separate munchkins). The key is to mix it with milk and they won't even notice :)

I found the munchkin at my local Walgreens drug store. Here it is (only $2) -http://www.munchkin.com/products/detail.html?section=prodCategories&ID=10001&pID=220

BTW, I am going to ask the pharmacist if he/she can put a tiny bit of flavor in his prescription it when I refill next time.
